I have had my XS for about a year and have been detecting for about 4 years. I am a cop and really enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of detecting. I actually find it kind'a theraputic. I have no problem finding coins old or new...But I would like to recover more jewlery. I would like for someone to share a good program that will help me find some of that gold out there in the sand. I must admit that I am not technically minded (or a good speller). I do not use things like "iron mask" and other features to thier full advantage becouse I really do not undersatnd them. My smart screen has a little block in the upper left hand conner and really could not even tell you about the iron mack setting. I digg just about evry thing, but with hunting beaches 3 to for days a week and the Bahhams twice I have only found two gold rings. I know that rings are alot rarer than coins, but I was hopping for a quick lesson for beach/ring hunting. Please do not hesitate to e-mail me and good luck to all with your future hunts!!!
Thanks,
CE Spivey

You really should be detecting in Iron Mask and it is really easy. Also dig all repeatable signals!!! This is important because gold can send a range of tones due to the different gold amounts in a ring.. such as 10 caret and 24 carrot.
Click here to better understand detecting in iron mask..

Jim, When you mention repeatable signal are you meaning thru a normal swing(side to side) or attacking target from a different angle(90)?

If you mean that your smart screen has only the upper right open and teh rest is blacked out then you arent going to find many rings.. if you are beach hunting you really should switch into iron mask only.. even if at a high setting of factory default -6.. this will open your screen up to accept any gold rings at least.. simply push the iron mask button to turn it on,, then once more to go into detect.. the first time brings up the adjustment screen where you can use the arrows to turn it up or down.. the lower the number the less iron mask you are using(or more iron you are accepting).. If you do use a pattern use the select button from the menu and ppush clear.. then just reject nails and maybe crowncaps.. I still find that gold sounds better than tabs.. if your getting a hit that reads on the screen like a tab, but somehow is hitting with a slight difference in tone and staedy toned dig it up... Almost always tabs will give a different tone from one direction to another, while a med to large gold ring oin that same are will hit steady toned.. not always if one is on edge or something but you can pick off good stuff in trash going by sound quality alone.. My rule of thumb when hunting in non ferrous tradh is dig everything that reads a single steady tone from more than one direction no matter where it reads on the meter(except solid lower right) Using iron mask even if you are still choosy in what you dig can teach you a lot of good and bad target sounds.. especially if you do dig them all for a while till your confidence level gets up enough to ignore targets.. I still find that normal audio and fast response gives teh cleanest hits to differentiate.. Oh and anything thats sounding deep should be dug if it even gives a hint of a high tone as long as its repeatable to some extent.. you mioght get chorps off iron but for the most part small iron will null more than give a response

Do you have Andy Sabisch's book Mastering the Minelab Explorer xs and s, it talks about setting up a beach program and gold settings.
