Sand Shark is pretty forgiving on settings. Like Bill indicates, figure out if you prefer the VCO or normal mode. I've found VCO catches my attention a little better when just skirting targets, but normal seems to stretch the threshold rise just a little and that may help just a little when listening for deep ones.
Most places I run with pulse width about half way between the preset and max. I normally run volume at full and threshold just audible. Two years ago I was in Daytona beach with the Sand Shark and was having trouble with an unstable threshold. Played with settings and found that turning the volume down just barely off full really smoothed out the threshold. Not sure how the volume interacts with the threshold in the circuit design, but a small setting change sure made a difference in smoothness of threshold at that location.
It is pretty hard to fail with any settings on the Sand Shark. Play with them and listen to the detector carefully to see what the detector tells you as you are hunting. Don't sweep real fast, it likes a relaxed sweep speed. At Daytona I also found spots of pink to red sand that I had to really slow the sweep speed down or the Sand Shark would sound on the sand. With a very slow sweep I was able to pick up coins through the colorful, mineralized, sand.
