Help with my new (to me) Whites Eagle Spectrum

Here's the story... I don't have enough money to buy a new high-end machine, so I decided to buy an old high-end machine, the Whites Eagle Spectrum. I've only heard great things about this machine, aside from the weight, but that won't be an issue. So, I picked one up off of eBay and received it on Friday. Now, of course, I'm looking for help and advise.

One relatively straightforward question I have, can XLT or DFX programs be used on this machine? Most of the setup looks quite similar, except for a few missing features, and the scale of some of the settings looks to be different. The XLT seems to be the most similar.

Does anyone know of any good Eagle Spectrum web sites, like dfxonly.com for the DFX? What about books?

I know it'll take time with the machine to learn it well, so I don't expect to be a pro with it right out of the chute. I'm primarily looking for general advise and tips, specific to this machine.

Thanks to anyone that can help!

It's the forrunner of the XLt and except with a smaller screen and less programs it is similiar.....Set as many of the programs like the xlt that the spectrum allows..you may miss a few thats on the xlt but it will be close...Oh yea..The Spectrum was and still is a very good detector...........

First of all the Eagle Spectrum is an awesome machine. It is soooo close to the xlt you DO have an high end machine.

As for the programs, you can use any spectrum xlt program the same. there is only like 2 additional options on the xlt that are not on the Eagle, and they won't make a difference.

Do you have the Instructional Manual? If not, here is the link to White's and they have the manual available online for download. IT'S A MUST MUST MUST HAVE.

Next, I strongly recommend the book, Spectrum Secrets. Although everywhere you see the book for sale, the description states it's for the xlt and dfx, but I have the book, he covers the Eagle as well.

Lastly, go to JB's White's Spectrum website, any of the xlt programs will work.

I had an Eagle Spectrum for about 12 years and finally "upgraded" to the XLT. The XLT is somewhat lighter because it used 8 double A cells, whereas the spectrum usees 4 C cells. I had a lot of fun with the Spectrum. I used it with Jummy Sierra's BigFoot and had pretty good luck with it. I would agree with one other comment. You do have a high end machine!

Hi Wayne,

I'm very happy with the machine so far. For batteries, I'm now using four 2700 mAh NiMH AA cells in the "C" cell pack. I'm using adapters to make the AA cells fit as "C" cells. The AA's reduce the weight, and since they are 2700 mAh, they keep going and going and going...

I may convert the NiCad pack that I have over to NiMH using four 5000 mAh "C" cells. I'd have to get, or build, a custom charger for it, but I imagine the machine would run forever on such a battery pack.

BTW, I'm not too far away from you. I'm just a little south, down here in Orlando.

Happy hunting!

Kyle

Hey, maybe some day we could get together for a few hours hunt. I have a very good friend here that I hunt with and we could probably find some place midway, like maybe Lake Panasofkee.
