Help with MXT readings in CJ mode

I am starting to use my MXT more for coin shooting than I have in the past. I noticed that I am getting good signals and reading in negitives numbers for example -32. I used both the stock coil and shooter coin with the same results, I used my gain at 10, disc at 2 to 3 and threshold barely audible in coin jewlry mode. Is this normal, should I dig these targets or do I have a problem with my MXT. Thanks for any help

I only dig if I get a +60 or higher. It is possible to get a good signal in any range, I am pretty sure anything under zero is going to be iron.

I would definetly GB and place it in the lock position. You can switch between relic/prospecting mode. If it's a higher % iron , like 30% it's not a coin. Keep working with it. Let us know what happens. HH

I get negative reading all the time, they are ferrous type targets.
As a coin hunter, you don't need to worry about them. Turning your disc up just a little so that you only get nickels and above will help some. But remember small gold can read as low as 0 on the VDI.
Sounds like your MXT is workin perfectly.

Hi John...I don't think there is anything wrong with your MXT. All three modes will pick up negative numbers depending on your level of disc. Oak is exactly right...small gold can register zero and even slightly negative. Also, depending on your ground conditions, hot rock and high mineralization can produce some false readings. I myself use the relic mode more. It goes a bit deeper and the VDI numbers are exactly the same. Don't give up the ship................

HI John, In my experience with the MXT anything that sounds good should be investigated. Those smooth signals that repeat with a careful resweep of the coil are worth investigating if you are in a dig it all mode. Don't trust the ID around iron.

Also, dropping the disc to just below 2 will help when hunting around iron. Make sure you are properly ground balanced and if it sounds good dig it.

Dig some of those negs and see what they are. Only then you'll know.

My rules with the MXT are:

1 - Dig all repeatable positive numbers.

2 - See rule number 1.

3 - Dig neg number down to -20 only if they are verifiable, clear, repeatable. and I'm getting anxious to find something.

3 - Sometimes dig repeatable neg numbers and be prepared to see iron.

Shouldn't the MXT knock out iron sounding off with the disc at 2 or 3. I got a good signal at -32 with the disc at about 3 in CJ mode and ground balanced.

As Jeff pointed out in a recent post the signature of iron can vary as the coil sweeps across it. Flat irregularly shaped rusty iron and some rusty nails are the usual culprits.
