help with mxt......newbe questions

I have been using the mxt for a month now and seem to have problems with finding good targets in areas with iron. I was hunting this past weekend with a buddy and he was using a tejon and he was trying to help me with finding things. If he got a good target he would call me over and have me check it to see what the mxt said vrs his tesoro and I was checking in relic mode and when his called it good I would get iron hits almost solid with just a hint of what might be good. So I said no good he digs and gets a U.S. civil war button. I have noticed that if you are on the edge of a medium to large piece of iron(2 inchs+) that it will ring up good and as you pinpoint and get to center then recheck it is solid iron. I am also using the stock 9.5 coil which doesnt help and have a excellerator 6 inch on the way. I have had similar problems coin hunting in dirty areas. I hope the coil helps but am going out tomorrow again with him to a old ghost town and know I am going to run into the same problem with it (new coil will be here tomorrow evening) So I am looking for help to make my day better so I dont keep getting ribbed by him that I got the mxt when he owned one and didnt like it that it couldnt make up its mind on a target and always jumped around with every sweep. I need to show up his 500 dollar tesoro or at least not look like a fool tomorrow if possible. I just cant see digging every iron target to try to get lucky on finding a coin. I would be digging more than looking in some of these places as you cant dig a hole without getting some sort of iron. I am sure their has to be a way to know if it has a good target hidden with it or just on the outside of just iron. I have ordered the mxt edge book for tips on problems and to learn any tricks you can do with it. I do know this, if it is a good target by itself it will ring true and have found a musket ball as far as 12 inches and a pewter button at 14 inches. So it can find things a great depth just need to figure out when to dig and not to and any other good tips from people that have been using for a while that think they know something that will help. Maybe setup or I read about detuning while pinpointing. Things like that are so valueable to this. I have also tried sweeping one way then turning 90 degrees and sweeping again just to have it say iron and him to dig a good target. He is running a stock 8 inch coil on the tejon. One main question is the fact you might sweep 5 times and get iron every time but one good signal saying button does that mean that you have two targets every time? Or I am on the outside edge of iron. I cant tell when it is telling the truth so to speak.
thanks to all that give tips and help.

I don't think I can adequately describe it so I will just say. If you do not already have it, get Jeff Fosters book, THE MXT Edge, read pages 100-104, then get a DD coil and you will eat your buddy's lunch! Your MXT will do much much more than the Tejon, although I do like Tesoros. Learn that MXT and he will be wondering why he didn't keep his!

I used the desensitize pinpointing to try to separate the targets better with the larger coil and walked away with more than him for once and he started asking me alot of questions and even said maybe he should have tried to use it longer.hehe. This time he had his fisher f75 and fisher cz5 out and used them both because he isnt comfortable with the f75 yet. So it is getting better for me the more I use. I have the mtx edge on the way as of yesterday and also got a excellerator 6" dd and am going to use it toady and compare the two when I go out. I also just traded a bran new bullseye2 for a 8 " excellerator since I had 2 pinnpointers all ready. So looking forward to today with the new coil to see how much it can help in a trashy area.

I think you will come to really like the smaller coils in trashy areas. I hunt several very trashy parks off and on and the trash level there makes the standard 9.5 coil nearly useless. The 5.3 is considerably better and the 4X6 is a marvel at picking the goodies out of the trash. When all is said and done though, the only true way to know if a target is a goodie or trash is to dig it. Your display is only a best estimate by the machine. So, as we see often on the forums, If you don't want to miss the gold, "dig everything".
