Tabdog is correct...Your setup is going to depend on your soil conditions, and what your hunting for...for Relic hunting, I suggest hunting in the ALL-Metals mode with discrimination turned fully CCW. For jewelry hunting, use the same method as Relic, and dig all those pull tab and screw top signals...for coin hunting, I hunt in Auto-Notch with the DISC turned to about 10 o'clock to take out iron, but the Auto-Notch does a good job of this on it's own without the added discrimination/notching...Sometimes I throw a nickel on the ground in DISC mode and turn the DISC knob until I just lose the nickel, then turn it back till I just pick it up again...This will cut out all Iron objects, but pick up everything else. In all cases, I start with the Sensitivity at about 2 o'clock and start sweeping...if I get false signals (mostly when my coil is swinging left), I turn the SENS down until they stop...I then leave it in this position. As far as pinpointing goes, I stay in my current mode and "X" the target with a swing length of about 1 foot from center of target on each side...Note where the center of the inner coil is when you hear the tone...then move the coil front to back on the target in the same manner, once again looking for the spot where the tone sounds...where these lines intersect is where your target should be...Another method is to switch to ALL-Metal Mode with the DISC fully CCW and ground balance in Pre-Set...Raise the coil to waist height, then hit the Ground-Trac button...Now lower the coil to the ground and push the coil to the surface gently (do not lean on the detector). Hit the Ground Trac button again (you should here no sound from your speaker/headphones...now sweep your coil over the target and listen carefully. The sound will be loudest when the inner coil is directly over the target. it takes some playing with each machine to get the rhythm down...My machine likes a SENS setting of about noon in my soil conditions...The coil likes to be about 1 inch above the surface, with a swing speed of about 2 feet per second...Remember to keep the coil level to the ground and at the same height with each swing...Swing the coil in a arc out in front of you...do not swing like a golf club...This will cause false signals as your coil is raised at the end of your swings.
Hope this helps some...
Happy Hunting,
