help with jewelry

Howdy all, I've been reading the forum for a while now and appreciate the wealth of knowledge this group has to offer. I have owned my MXT for a couple of years and (with the help of this group) have finally started to find some decent stuff. I do have a question for those of you that are successful in finding rings. How many thousand pull tabs do you dig for one ring? I know this is a very subjective question but I have just about given up on digging anything that register between 11 and 60. I must say though, that I have an impressive collection representing every model of pull tab that was ever put on a can. Is there anything that gives you a clue, like double beeps or slight tone change or anything that will help me distinguish between the two. I operate mostly in the relic mode and have been using the small DD shooter coil. Gain at +3, discr at 2 and trigger in the middle position. I have to say that the small coil does ferret the good stuff out of the trashy areas and with the price of gold where it is, I would really like to get some jewelry. Sorry for the long post but it is my first one. THANKS to this group for the tips I have read so far. HH Rod

I have had my MXT with the Bigfoot coil since last September and I have found over 80 pieces of gold and silver jewelry items which includes rings , bracelet's, and chains. About 20 to 25 percent were found in play grounds with wood chips. The remainder were found at parks and sports play fields. I usually dig strong signals that run between 12 and 37 on the VDI meter. And readings from about 76 on up. In my experience, about 10 to 14 hours a week, I have figured that I find about one piece of gold jewelry for about every 8 hours I detect. And a little more than that in silver jewelry. The average depth is around 2 to 3 inches, but none deeper than 4 inches. Using the Bigfoot coil I cover a lot of area but not a lot of depth. I probably dig about 200 or so pieces of aluminum cans and pull tabs for every gold piece I find. One thing I have noticed is that almost every piece of gold jewelry gave a strong repeatable signal. My gold ring finds run from 10 to 37 and average around 22 or so. But gold rings and such can run from about 5 to 65 on the VDI meter. Most silver rings I found are in the 55 to 85 range. I run my gain usually at +1. I found that running too much gain distorts target signals under about 3 inches. I also run in the relic mode with the trigger in the center position. I hope this helps.

Howdy Mike, I appreciate your response. I have considered a bigfoot coil but haven't got one yet. I like the DD shooter a little better than the stock coil because of the trash but I need to start digging some different locations ie; schools and playgrounds. I have been a coin hunter for many years and deeper has always been better. I really like the old stuff. I have found some barber dimes and lots of merc dimes but it is getting pretty slim pickins in the parks. Thanks for your tips and I guess I will start digging those pull tabs as some of them might actually be jewelry.

Thanks and HH, Rod
