Could be an Artillery medal, most likely as the cannons criss cross in the back and also could be for a volunteer outfit because of the back photo, not for certain, though, head over to ant civil war collector sight that lists medals, Jack
 
I think this is a Sons of Veterans Badge..and would be for the son of a Civil War Vet.
