Help With GTI 1500

Hello I have a question I have been metal Detecting for a long time But bought a New 1500 and So far I Love it the Problem I am having is Some times I can not get it to lock in on the target. Even when I get a good Bell Tone it seem to look but never find it I have worked slow and moved all around to pin point as close as I can. But it will not lock in after digging and retriving the coin I check for other metal and not finding any I am not sure why it does not lock in, when its a coin I have looked all around and could not find any junk to through it off is their a secret to pin pointing with the 1500?

It's possible you may not have been centred over the target. By locking in, I assume that you are talking about the sizing. You have to be very precise if you want the sizing to work. There are a few things that you can do to get the best out of it. Firstly, like the depth reading on any detector, the smallest sizing that you get, usually indicates that you are properly centred. You can also detune the pinpoint by releasing then reapplying the pinpoint while still over the target. One last thing that helps to properly sort targets of close size but different, is to lift the coil while sweeping over the target till you get a depth reading of 5 or 6 inches, then hit the pinpoint button. This seems to be the sweet spot that give the most accurate sizing. US coins all seem to lock into size B. Over here in Australia, that's is not the case, but that's OK as the Imaging is the best visual means of discrimination that I've ever used. It's consistently the most accurate.

When using non imaging coil will it show depth because it has to lock in with the imaging to show depth? And is the sniper coil a good coil for the 1500?

I love the 4.5 scorcher coil because it has a liitle x on the coil and when you pinpoint it never is off from that mark. The drawback is you lose imaging and won't cover as much distance as the larger coils, but for parks and playgrounds, schools and etc. I wouldnt use any other coil myself. I havent tried the dd coil on mine yet but I need too.

Yes but it will behave like most other small coils I presume. I don't have the sniper coil, but do have the 5x10 coil. I Still get a reliable depth reading with it.

I've found with my GTI 2000 that the initial pinpoint area is pretty wide compared with every other detector I've ever used which pinpoints the first time in a pretty small area. For example, with my other detectors, the first time I hit the pinpoint button, the detector sounds within about a 3 inch or less diameter circle from the center point of the coil. With my 2000 it can be as much as 6 inches requiring me to stop my coil movement, press pinpoint a second time to narrow down the area, and sometimes even a third time.

While this detector is still new to me, pinpointing isn't really that hard to figure out, so it may just be a characteristic with the GDI chipset. I don't know how similar the 1500 is.

Also, as others have mentioned, turning the sensitivity down to around 6.5 or 7 may help alleviate or remove some of those rogue belltone signals.

My 4.5 in coil works really well on my 1500 especially in the trashy areas. Since its detecting area is so small underground it can really differentiate targets real close together. And it's helpful when working close to foundations and poles, giving you an extra couple of inches of "reach". Having no imaging isn't a big deal but you still see the depth reading!

Thank you I did not know because with the coil that comes with it it will not give you a depth reading with out showing its size that is why I was wondering I ordered a sniper coil today should be here in a few days thank you all for the info it helps a lot.....Rich

I got my 4.5 ace yesterday and tried it out today at a couple local parks I was able to get a lot closer to the equipment and found some coins I would not have found with the stock coil I switched back to the stock coil to cover the larger portion of the play ground it worked very well I love the GTI 1500 I wish I would of got the 2500 But I am not disappointed with the 1500

People have said the depth of the 1500 is about the same as the 2500 but also that it's lighter and easier to work with...the ideal coin machine for that reason. The 2500 is pretty big.

Thanks muddyshoes Your a very knowledgeable guy I have read a lot of your post thank you for taking time to read mine..Rich

Welcome Rich. Most of my knowledge is old school. Getting back into the hobby after about 10-15 years has been really challenging. Aside from the vastly improved technology, bells and whistles, I've been driving a computer for too many years, and all these squats are making me realize just how out of shape I am. :)

I've learned so much from the folks here, it's so great to be able to give back now and then.

Happy hunting!

I have been doing it for more than 30years stopped for awhile But a friend of mine wanted to go out again So I decided if I was going to I neeeded to upgrade to a better Detector I have always used Garrett Just works for me SO I decided on the New Ace 350 its So much better than what I had and old ads ll it steel works good But no where near as deep as the 350 then I started reading about the 1500 and the 2500 and I decided to go get a 1500 I really have been finding a lot better stuff I am loving this hobby like I did when I first started it way back when. I am getting a lot older now and I have had some heart problems had a 3 bypass a year ago So I am not as quick as I once was But its very good exercise and I love finding the older coins. Thanks again for all your advise.

Just a quick update with the 4.5 coil I took it out on fathers day and I found 14 quarters and 18 dimes and 26 Penney's no nickels But all in a small play ground I have not hunted before and all in about 1hr and 45 min I was excited to find that much in such a small play ground
