Help with AIR Tests

I am trying to do some air tests with the new Explorer and was hoping some of you experts could lend me a hand.
From the factory presets it appears that my machine "with either the std coil or 8" coil", only starts registering at 6", from being an avid reader & student of this forum, this seems to be wrong.
I have a franklin half, merc dime, wheaties, '50 Jeff nickel, '93 IH and current coins to use for the tests.
My old Discovery 2000 detector can equal these results.
So I must come to the conclusion that it is "the operator" and not the machine.
If you get the chance, please help me with some tests that I can compare with you experts.
If there is a problem with my machine, I want to get it rectified before it warms up.
Thank you and HH.....Jack (Luray VA)

Make sure you have "DEEP" turned on and "FAST " turned off in the Recover Screen of the Options Tab in the main menu. If you don't show Recover in the Options Tab, change to Advanced from Quick, first. Use the iron mask screen set wide open at -16. Most importantly, set the manual sensitivity up as high as it will go. if you cant get over 20 indoors without falsing move outside away from buildings, wires, etc. When you sweep over the coil make fast sweeps, this will make a better sounding signal. You should have no trouble making a dime come in at 9-10 inches. Remember, air testing is only useful to hear the subtle differences in tones and their changes as the target goes closer to or further away from the coil, and to read what the crosshair does on the smartfind screen.... not to guage the depth capability of the detector. Too many factors with ground conditions and other variables affect the depth capability of this or any detector.
Good Luck! HH, Mike.

Being an Explorer Boot Camp Trainee, I just finished 20 push ups for the info. I plan on doing this for all the info I receive from the experts on this forum. It appears I will have plenty more push-ups coming in the future. This is by far the BEST forum I have ever been involved in, everything is a Positive, and there is a sense of camaraderie which is wonderful to be a part of. Thanks again to all the Positive people, and thanks GUV for providing a place in cyberspace for us. "MORE PUSH_UPS!!!.......Yes DRILL SGT!!!!
