help with a whites coinmaster 2900

ok I had when I was a kid, and still have a whites coinmaster 2900. I can't get it set right to use. I want to let my son use it to tag along with me while detecting. When I was a kid I loved it and found all kinds of goodies. I downloaded the manual from whites website, yet I just cannot figure how to tune it correctly.

ok #1 I turn it on
set all control knobs to P
hold coil out waist high, push button and turn tuner to right until tone is barely heard
release button
I set the disc at 5, and re push the button
I lower the coil to the ground and try to do air tests over coins and it does not pick them up?

tell me what I am doing wrong here? Thanks for the help.

thank you, it worked like a charm! air tested it and it picks up a penny easily at 7-8 inches, this detector is at least 20 years old, will make a great backup and also a good detector for my son.
