Help with a test

Rob (IL)

New member
I've been working with the correlate option lately. So I'd like to gather some data.

When you are hunting and you get a deep hit, if you are hunting in best data could you switch to correlate and compare your reading.

It's easy to do. I've got transmitting frequency on my live controls when I get the deep hit, I just hit ENTER and arrow down to correlate. I'm trying to determine if there is a depth difference between the two.[attachment 164918 ani_einstein.gif]........Rob

Rob,
I was detecting yesterday and I was trying to remember to do this test for you. I finally remembered last night right before I was ready to leave. I was detecting a small but old park. I got a deep signal that was coming in on my machine between penny and quarter and was telling me 9.5 inches deep. I switched over to correlate and ground balanced and tried to sweep over the target but got no response. I tried from different angles and I did get one quick blip and 42 then back to nothing. I did not mess with the span or wrap, it was all factory.
I went back to best data and ground balanced again and it was banging away like it did before. The target turned out to be a wheat penny. Hope this helps...

Thanks Magic, I figured that correlate would lose depth in our type of soil. You probably had span at 30 or 25. I don't care about the wrap. OK that's one for the best data. Rob

As you see there doesn't seem to be much interest in optimizing the V3i. Well, I don't have virgin ground to hunt and all my good stuff is DEEP. There has been much touted lately on two other forums about correlate instead of best data and consistency instead of intensity. The problem that I see is that just because someone finds a silver coin with correlate doesn't mean that it couldn't be found with with best data.

Several gurus post a program and everyone jumps on the wagon and wishful thinking takes over. I've checked with two people at Whites (smarter than me, maybe ) (They get paid) and they prefer best data over correlate and intensity over consistency. I believe in testing to see what works. My deep targets a very few in my area at this time.

I have been assured that changing between correlate and best data does not require re ground balancing. That's why I said to hunt with transmit frequency on the live control in view. On a deep target one click and you can switch between the 2 choices. I know correlate helps in trash and can help with EMI. But I want to SEE what happens on DEEP targets.

As Magic stated he would have missed the target if he had been in correlate. I've been leaning toward stereo mixed mode lately for deep targets. I think it is time to get out of the comfortable ruts we have fallen into and try some of the options we have on the Spectra. If you think you have found an edge I'll try it here in Illinois.

I couldn't agree more with this statement. I have seen no proof that correlate is the way to go all my deep copper and silver has come from best data. And that guru thing is getting annoying when those "gurus" start posting something other than clad maybe all start listening. I have tried posting advice over there but the lemmings will only follow there guru?

There is no doubt in my mind that Best Data has an advantage over Correlate just from the way the data is processed, but Correlate in trashy ground is a life saver for me and I'm willing to sacrifice the extra inch if it is even that much to not listen to all of the trash hits. For deep silver, single frequency 2.5 seems to have an edge over Best Data yet, but I just can not get myself to like the mixed mode, way too noisy in my ground. I might have to give it another try with reduced All Metal sensitivity and see if that makes a difference.

Well Larry I just read an older post on our forum where Jacks correlate program is stated as being deeper than Hi Pro. I was just trying to get some people to make the test like Magic did. I'm not saying correlate doesn't have it's place. I just used it yesterday at a very noisy site. Rob

If Jack is using his correlate program in sandy soil, he might be getting more depth than Best Data, I don't know how he is using it or what his program is, I just don't see how, in our mineralized ground though. For those who are not familiar with Correlate...........Correlate will compare the two strongest frequencies of the three, of a target and if they agree that you might have a good target, you will get a hit, if not you will not get a good report. (either no tone or trashy) If a deep coin can be seen by 2.5, but just barely, and the 7.5 can't see the coin, then you will not get a hit where on Best Data, the V will take the 2.5 frequency info and give a good report of a target.

When I use Correlate, I tend to run the Sensitivity a little higher because it lets me, and because of the higher settings, I believe I can get almost as deep as Best Data using the lower settings. I have yet to prove that but that is the way I used the DFX and it worked well for me in my ground and this has also proven to be very good to me with the V too. Don't get me wrong here either, I don't use Correlate all of the time, just when I need to keep my sanity. :rage: If the ground allows, I use Best Data and have been known to use single frequency as well on very clean ground.

Hey all, I visit the othe forums and I have been looking at a number of the programs and have them downloaded with and without the corellate setting. I too, am trying to figure out if the corellate is better or not. I've been trying to compare them over good targets as well. I just started doing this so no results as of yet. I will say "foxes" programs do run extremely quiet and smooth in my northern michigan soil. That makes my detecting a bit more enjoyable. There is also alot of tests they have conducted on filter selection, recovery delay and swing speed which does help a new guy like me. I agree with you rcasio44 I think the jury is still out on corelatte going any deeper or id'ing targets better. I will post results of my findings as they happen.

Living in Southern Az where the ground gets like concrete, I am wondering about setting up just to get the shallow stuff because of the grd. being so hard

I just found this thread. Rob, it looks like you have a good test study going on here. Somewhere along the line the purpose of my endeavors with the correlate mode on the V3 have gotten twisted. My primary hunting grounds are old parks and parkway strips with an occasional old house thrown in the mix. I do find a lot of deep coins using this program. By deep I mean 8 to 10 inches. My deepest finds have been in the 2.5 kHz single frequency mode. The reason I am such a big fan of the Correlate mode is it's uncanny ability to allow the higher conductive targets to stand out in the midst of deep iron and trash. I can't tell you how many targets I have dug recently that actually have iron and trash in the same hole. This goes beyond separation and recovery speed. You have to swing very slow and use the 5Hz filter to achieve this slow pace. With this technique I continue to pick out great coins from hard hit areas. The basis of the Correlate mode is to have a target give like responses from 2 of the 3 frequencies within the span limits. Lucky for us coins hit very comparably int he 2.5 and 7.5 frequencies. By adjusting the span you can narrow down this consistency. In essence you are not only hunting based on conductivity, but the uniformity of the target as well. I can tell you that the best data mode will mask out good targets in the scenario I just described. The Correlate mode puts out the weakest field out of all the modes on the V3, but what you have to remember is the limitation with the V3 is not the size of the field, but the ability to penetrate through the mineralization of that ground effectively. So as your soil gets better you will get better results with the larger field of the Best Data mode and using larger coils. In my moderate soil only Single frequency modes run deeper. Both the Best Data and Correlate have relatively equal depths for me. Mineralization strength is the key here. I have a fun V3 party trick I used do at group hunts when I first got the detector. Using the 2.5 kHz frequency and the Super12 coil. I would set the sensitivity as High as I could get it with TX Boost turned on. Drop the filter to 5. I could air test a Quarter at 20 to 24 inches and have it ID correctly on the display. This was a fun way to get reactions from my hunting buddies, What I am trying to get across here is your results are going to vary simply because of your soil. I will start cross checking finds before I dig Rob and let you know what I come up with. I always have my camera with me so I will shoot some video if I get interesting results.

Keep Swing'in
Jack

Good post Jack, I sent you a PM on your site. I want to see how close our soil is. Rob
