Help with a coil issue

The old review on my CXIII says it can use the 3x7 and 5x10 DD coils. I contacted Garrett and Melinda says:

Hi Dan,

The Gold Stinger coils will work on your CX III because the connector is the same, however, the factory does not recommend interchanging the coils because the frequencies are different and your detector may not ID right if you are using a Gold Stinger coil. It could also affect the sensitivity of your detector. The only DD coil we have that is made for the CX series is the 10 x 14 coil, but this coil is too big for finding gold nuggets (if that's what you're wanting to do). Usually gold is found in creek beds hidden by rocks and that's where the 4.5" coil comes in handy. You can manuver around the rocks a lot easier with a smaller coil.

I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

Melinda Harper

Has anyone tried usong the smaller Crossfire DD coils? I want it more for going to the beach, not gold hunting. I'm trying to find some used ones, but no luck. I do want to get a used 12.5", but would rather have the DD.

Any thoughts on this?

I went ahead a bought a 5x10 Crossfire coil off of ebay. I read some posts that said it works great in true AM mode but has some problems discriminating to provide a coin ID. I will test it out see how well it works. My hopes are it may work better at the beach than the concentric coils. It is made to operate at 15khz, slightly higher than the 7khz of the CXIII. But the plugs are the same.

I have a CXII As well.

Given the weight of the cxiii (with it's 6 "C" cell batteries!) I find the 12.5" to be very heavy, and the 4.5" does not cover enoughh surface, so I use the stock 8.5" coil most of the time.

Garrett made a 5X10 crossfire coil for the CX series, but not that many. Though the 5X10 Goldhunter that is made for the Scorpion has the same plug configuration, it just sits with a threshold tone and doesn't acknowledge any metal under the coil. I have the new coil listed in the classifieds.
