I was out relic hunting and came across this item I am unsure what it is. I dug it in Ringgold Georgia where civil war artifacts have been dug. They are building a house and the bulldover took 4in off the top and this item was about 2in deep. it measures 1in wide by 2 3/4in long

Well, I can't tell you the age of your whatzit, but I can tell you for sure that it is a ............................. "Flexco #2 Rubber Conveyor Belting Splice Clamp" ( or at least part of one). I know this because I have a box full of them in my truck. These things are used to "lace" or splice a tear in a rubber conveyor belt back together. You put one of these pieces on either side (front/back) of belt over the tear, the little spikes bite down into the rubber, and two special bolts go through the holes. The little tab that sticks into the hole seen in pic#2 is a locking tab that keeps the bolt head from spinning (the bolt has a notch cut into it for that reason).

The most common outdoor use of these repair items is in the servicing of tubgrinders, trommel screens, flail debarkers, etc. i.e. - forestry and construction equipment that makes use of a rubber conveyor belt.

For once I'm able to ID a WHATZIT!!!!!!!!!!
