[attachment 45658 100_0559navalrelic.jpg][attachment 45659 100_0560backofn.relic.jpg]found this last week at an old cellar site (1790 - 1900) this item is ONE piece stamped copper or brass alloy gold gilted very thin piece i've been told it could be a fake buckle from early 20th century or part of a real buckle from just prior to the 1900's or it could be some kind of hat or cap plate from around the civil war era . can anyone give me a better light on what i really have or point me to a good research site , i would be very grateful thanks

It appears to be a false (not fake in the true sense) Naval sash buckle worn for ceremonies not battle, etc. Then again it could be for civilian use, but I lean towards the military useage. You may want to email it to Steve Sylvia, owner of North South Trader Civil War magazine in Orange, VA. He has a section in his publication "Can you ID." Interesting find, David@Dixie

Thanks David I was beginning to think I'd never get a reply and thanks for your idea of what it may be that makes a lot of sense . I'm going to e-mail north south trader anyway but i think you nailed it
