HELP! Tell me if I am crazy or not.

I currently swing an Xterra 705 with the 10.5 DD coil but have an opportunity to get a new F5 with an 11" DD. I have been wanting to try something different and have always liked the look of the F5. How does this machine compare and how does it handle EMI? Am I stepping down,up or just making a lateral move. All suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I take it you are an inland jewelry hunter? The 705 has a great reputation for that...

Mike Hillis has a lot of great posts about the F5 for such a task, and he strongly believes in it for this...you may be able to glean some of his thoughts by searching his posts.. I'm sure somebody will be along shortly...but its good reading none the less, if you are thinking about the F5 for inland park gold/silver jewelry...I have to think the F5 would be a lot faster, lighter, etc?

ps: Yes, you are most likely crazy...but I dont think you have a corner on crazy around here! Seems to go with the Sport!

I like that the F5 hunts in the same frequency as the stock 705. My ground here is moderately mineralized, according to what the 705 tells me. How does the F5 handle EMI? I use the noise cancel feature on the 705 and have never experienced any issues with EMI. I had a Tek Gamma 6000 with the DD coil at one time but sold it due to huge EMI issues.

Man, I dont know...I have the F70...it has a 'freq shift' button a guy can make small changes with...I have had ZERO trouble with EMI..and I've had the thing from Georgia to Idaho, Salt Lake City UT, TN, OH, AL, KY, IN and here in MI....theres one place at a football field in IN and for some reason right below the lights, in about a 20' wide stretch, I get a bit, I hunt all sorts of similar areas and have not noticed, just that one place in IN for some reason?...I run such a low sens (mid 50's) I dont have any trouble picking my way through there, but I do notice it somewhat..gets a bit chattery..not bad enough to miss, just sort of annoying....

You might find the F70 an interesting rig..it has those DP tones which are just killer for coin/jewelry..fast as all get out, and uses AA's instead of the 9v...just a thought....

I have used both and I had success with both. I do believe that a 705 with the 10.5 inch medium frequency coil makes it a better all around detector. I had the 11inch dd coil on my F5 and it seemed to top out at 7 to 8 inches of depth in my ground. I got about 2 inches more depth with the 705 10.5 inch coil. But, I did find the F5 to be extremely accurate and it was slightly better in that respect. If I was going to have to pick one with the coils that you mentioned, I would keep the 705. The F5 has what I consider to be the best controls of any detector I have used and all of this information is a glance away.

I had a F5 and the biggest problem I had was that I was always adjusting the knobs without knowing it. I always hunt with gloves and when I was pinpointing, putting down, or picking up the detector I was turning the knobs. I did have EMI issues but not real bad.

I found that the X-Terra 705 and the AT-Pro worked better for me when looking for silver / gold items.
