HELP, SOV. GT or MXT?

David

New member
Hi, I am fed up with push pad detectors with menus and sub-menus. Due to stress. I want an analog manual turn dial detector with a auto trac all metal and digital meter, now.

Can someone help me, I think the Sovereign GT may really be the best choice for me.

Does someone know, comparing the new Sovereign GT(with the digital meter) is it a better choice than a Whites MXT being another analog manual turn dial detector as well, or not??

(The other manual knob turn detectors with all metal auto trac with a good discrimination are the the Eureka Gold and Tesoro Lobo have no digital meter.)

P.S. It is VERY ODD that Minelab does not list the Sovereign GT as a GOLD DETECTOR. http://www.minelab.com/consumer/page.php?section=239&pId=24&pNm=GPX-4500&x=y

then Minelab turns around and contradicts themselves and say "....with astonishing depth and can be use from the park or building site to the sandy beach or the gold fields." Quote, in their own words!!!!!!!!

Makes no sense to me!!

Sorry I apologize, I just now found the answer to my question after I posted and it was too late to Edit it....

1. Can the Minelab Sovereign GT be used for finding gold nuggets?
The Sovereign GT is designed for the serious coin and relic hunter and doesn't have the sensitivity to smaller gold nuggets like a true gold detector. However, unlike other coin machines, it is equipped with a true Automatic ground balance in the All-Metal mode, so can be used in the heavy mineralized goldfields, with good depth on larger targets. In high trash areas in the goldfields, the excellent discrimination and Iron Mask feature helps it to eliminate the ferrous trash, yet still detect larger nuggets as well as those associated with Ironstone.

But still would like to know about the MXT comparison??

No relics. Just for the beach & coinshooting and also gold nuggets(not looking for the smallest pieces, hunting in trashy goldfield areas).

Well then hands down the Sov GT is best for beach hunting and its a better coin hunter also, gives much better ID especially at depth. Now the GT will get small gold but not near what the MXT will get so you have to choose which your going to do more. If mostly nugget hunting I would say the MXT is best as it will also work well at the beach for occasional hunts, but if your spending most of your time beach and coin hunting I would get the GT.

My Wife has the MXT and we don't do any gold or beach hunting and she does very well with it coin hunting when we go out. The MXT is a easy and fun detector to use, but when it comes down to the deep and those close to trash the GT will out perform it with no problem. In the hours out with it the MXT will cover more ground and get more coins, but these are the newer surface coins while the GT may not get as many but are the older and deeper coins with some mask by trash. It gets quality and not quaintly.

Hello,

This is a very tough choice. You have selected two of the better detectors out there. I have been using the Sovereign series detectors for almost 10 years now and I simply love it!
Being at Kellyco, we have the unique opportunity to use and familiarize with just about every type of detector made. I personally have been extremely success full using a Sovereign for saltwater beach hunting and I really believe that for mostly saltwater beach hunting this would be you best choice overall. You can also feel free to call me any time toll free and I will be happy to go over the details on both detectors.

Thanks to all of you for the help, looks like the GT is better for coin and beach than the MXT. Yes I have heard the one big draw back to the GT is it is very slow(probably because the BBS is slower than a regular VLF, is this right?) and even the very deep Minelab Muskateer Advantage(as Minelab says about it: The most powerful VLF detector on the market. The Advantage outperforms other brand's detectors at three times the price! You will be amazed at the awesome depth..)(I wish they would put Ground Tracking and a meter on the Advantage) a person can cover about 3 or 4 times more ground with it over the GT with simular depth in black dirt soil. The MXT will cover more ground than the GT as you said. But the GT will puch deeper in mineralized ground and salt water beach over the Advantage and MXT, and is also the best at iron trash separation. The GT will not find very small nuggets but that is the sacrifice.

I now would chose the GT as first choice(with the meter) for what I want as the best analog, manual turn knob unit on the market... P.S. Yes I know Tesoro makes very good, fantastic analog, manual turn knob units but I will take the GT over them using a 15" WOT or 12.5" Sun Ray...

I couldn't agree more. I had both an MXT and DFX and while they are good machines they mostly excelled at surface clad compared to my GT which seems to hate clad but loves deep old items which is good, because that's what I'm after.

You should get an Excalibur 2, you will have muscles on your arms where you didn't think possible.

On the goldfields, any good beach detector would be good in the salt lakes (do you have salt lake goldfields in your country?) as the SD's and GP's struggle there. That is maybe what Minelab meant. I don't know about the Sov. but my Explorer SE was absolutely hopeless in the goldfields of Australia! Different ground conditions over there though.
