HELP: Silver cleaning - salt water action over 10 years

New member
I am sorry for going off topic here.

Looking for good reliable and "fast" process for cleaning silver chains stained with silver oxide (or whatever).
Tried al foil and baking soda + hot water ... too slow
also tried electrolysis... for silver rings it is best way... for chains not so much

Soaking in acid ... HCl ... ?

Any advice ?

Chains are black, covered with thick layers of oxide.

Do not use HCL!
Enter the silver object in a bowl. For this purpose, a teaspoonful of salt (NaCl) NOT Natron/baking soda (NaHCO3) and a few snippets of aluminum foil. Then pour the whole thing with hot water.
Now you can watch as the dark layer dissolves on the silver.
Depending on the degree of pollution of the silver takes one to two minutes . You should not be too long in the cleaning , otherwise constitutes a difficult -to-remove layer on the silver.
The silver is not immediately clean, use it rather out , wash it off and put it in a new bath - the cleaning power of the solution is limited.
By the way: The warm water only serves to kick off the reaction and speed . Theoretically, it goes well with cold water , but then it takes much longer to dissolve the black film .

some good stuff you can find on the website metalldetectingworld

Greetings.

I have half done few of them with electrolysis process and they are better but not silver looking yet.
Must try with salt and AL foil + hot water.

I have seen video tutorial ... AL pan + baking soda + water on stove
