hello,
I have been detecting for many years with the sovereign xs-2 and never had any problems. But resently I have been having some.when i switch the
detector on, and try to start detecting, the treshold starts to randomly beep and screech and then sometimes stop altogether for a second or two, and then start again.
if i turn the sensitivity down, it only reduces the problem by a little bit.i think the problem is the coil(8"), but i dont know how to fix the problem.
could any one help me?
thanks
john

Unplug the coil, then turn it on. See what happens.
If you have a meter, take it out of line and try again with only the coil hooked up.
If you have both, disconnect both.
The control box by itself should turn on normally and have a steady threshold.

This should help isolate the problem.

Coil and meter connectors can have bad solder joints , shorts, or corrosion. This is a possibility.
While it does not sound quite like a battery problem, check the connections for corrosion, and if possible, measure the voltage. If you have a dead cell or two you might get this problem, but not probable.
Eliminate what you can and see what happens.

thanks for the advice,
i have unplugged the coil from the box, and there is a steady threshold. so it must be the coil.
where could i go from here?

I would take the coil connector apart and look for loose connections and shorts between the wires and pins. First, would wiggle the cable at various points between the coil and connector to see if you find a sensitive spot.
Problems at the connector end are common. The cable clamp can become loose, letting the wires inside the connector twist around and touch each other, and breaking off the wires or pulling solder joints loose.

The coil could be bad, but let's look at the easier and more common stuff first.
