Help selecting a new detector with screen 400.00 or less

I have a Tesoro Silver UMax. I have not used it too much yet, but have retired and bought a townhouse at the NC coast. A man was metal detecting at Emerald Isle and I was telling him I have wanted to try a machine with a screen. He suggested a White Coinmaster. Now I see there are several from which to choose. He says he is using a 700.00 detector but finds about as much treasures with a cheap Whites coinmaster,. Can someone familiar with White detectors tell me what I need? I will be using it mainly on the beaches of Topsail Beach where my son just bought a condo and Emerald Isle NC near my home. I have a Garrat pinpointer, at least I bought one. I have to find where I put it in my house! Its not in my bag I normally kept it in. He also told me he finds most coins and jewelry at the high tide line near the dunes. I used my Tesoro Silver Umax several times at Wrightsville beach for hours and found only a few pennies and bottle caps. I also tried to find something where an old schoolhouse from 1915 was located but found nothing but old tractor parts. I have probably spent at least 15-20 hours so far and mostly found pennies. The man I met found a big class ring at Emerald Isle the day I talked with him and finds jewelry all the time. Now I know I will find trash and pennies but I want to find more than that! Once at Wrightsville beach I did find a pocket spill of change it one spot where they played volleyball. That was fun. I also found 3.00 in change in a parking lot across from my motel at ocean isle nut nopthing very old. I have not found ANY silver. I once bought a fancy Tesoro which was too complicated for me at a pawn shop and I sold it. Any suggestions? I really do like looking for treasure. I don't know the benefits of paying more for the higher priced coinmasters. I will be using it on the beach most of the time if that points me in a certain direction.

Have a look at the Eurotek Pro with the 11" dd...if a guy was just dry sanding, that one would be something sweet, and the price is ridiculously low for the power you are getting...
Theres some great finds up in the dry sand...most water hunters never go there, most beach hunters work the towel line...very few specialize on just finding the dry sand kind of spots and hitting them...its tough duty though, slogging through that powder and scooping all signals as fast as you can..thats what it takes, cover a lot of sand and scoop everything especially trashy sounding targets and the gold will show up...so you need a light fast rig similar to the Eurotek Pro with that 11"dd for coverage yet with a balance...this chain was up in the dry sand of the dunes...it was a big one that paid my rig off 2 times over I found my first month or two into this sport...forget the pinpointer and get a good light SMALL bucket sand scoop with about a 4' handle...something light and fast you swing overhand at a target like an axe and not stomp on and dig with like a shovel..cover a lot of ground and dig it all as fast as you can early before the sun comes up....

You have pretty hands, Mud!

As Mud said leave your pro pointer at home when working the beach and get yourself a good sturdy sand scoop. I used a five inch scoop for the sand until I got a waterproof machine so I could get in the water without worrying about drowning my machine. I quickly found that the five inch scoop was way too small in the moving surf but it did work very good in the dry sand.

Yeah on the scoop Geo!..theres a big difference between dry sanding and wet work...right tool for the job kind of thing.. Hey Pete! You know how much that hand has cost me in the last 36 yrs?

I use a detector that does not have a screen, Sound only, for my beach work. It discriminates out iron and steel (except big pieces) and I dig everything else that it finds. Since Gold can give a variety of tones/numbers I am far better off for not having a screen that might tempt me to Not dig a nice gold ring.

You don't a detector with a visual display for beach hunting. What are you looking for at the beach? Gold and silver jewelry right? Gold responds from the level of tiny bits of foil, up to the same level as zinc pennies. Silver reads from the level of pennies up to the top of the non-ferrous scale. So you can NOT avoid digging any non-ferrous targets at the beach, and with as easy as it is scoop sand why would you?

When you land hunt, there are all sorts of targets to avoid. When you beach hunt, you should only be avoiding iron.

Used White's MX5. It's a step up from the Coinmaster series. Dry sand and wet sand even though it is single frequency. I use mine with a Detech 13 inch Ultimate coil.

Can distinquish between a pull tab and a nickel by 2 digits on the display.
Can tell the difference between coins and notch out iron.
Gold jewelry will be a unique TID and silver jewelry will be distinquishable from dimes and quarters.
Good identification.

I like it on busy public beaches.

I also use Minelab Sovereign, various Excals, Detector Pro HH Pulse units and a White's TDI.

But if you want a display the White's MX5 is good.

ROBOCOP

if you have the silver umax . Install the 18'' widescan and watch your finds increase bigtime on the dry sand. You can even get semi wet sand with that clean sweep coil as well. Great combo .

An introductory into the water hunting would be Detectorpro Pirate pro. IMHO. .

If $400. is your max limit. Keep your eyes open on fleabay for a good used Whites beach hunter I.D . I've hunted on your writesville beach. Also hunted in chalotte. and Wilmington .

Search some of the reviews on water units. You may be surprised which comes up the most. Also. You dont have to break the bank because some guy has a detector that claims its the best. You have to remember ,you have to get the coil over the target is what counts.

best of luck.
