help! Problems with sunray hipmount cables. I think?

I have had my Sovereign GT, for a few years and I know the detector well. Today i decided to use the hipmont bag to hang the control box from my neck, while detecting a field. I have the Sunray extension cable to be able to have the Sunray probe mounted on the pole and use a hipmount configuration. As soon as I fired up the GT, I got multiple false beeps. I have never had this happen before. The GT usually Nulls when going over junk. This was sounds of multiple signals even though there where none. I did have some huge power lines going over the field so I flipped the noise cancel switch and that was no help. I was detecting the same field the day before with the detector set up conventionally with the Sunray S-8. I had no problems with falsing when I used the detector with the S-8 and the control box pole mounted. Today the stock 10inch slimline was going nuts with the hipmount setup. So I broke down the detector and set it up pole mounted with the stock 10inch, and everything ran smooth. I switched back to the hipmount set up and the falsing continued again, but then stopped? All day I experimented and found that I would get inconsistent performance with the hipmount set up. My question is. Does high power lines have more of an effect on a detector with hanging cables? I had the cables secured thru the hip mount loop to avoid cable strain. Or is this a case of perhaps faulty extension cables on my machine? Has anyone else had problems with falsing when using hipmount extension cables. I am such as nut over taking care of my machine. I started thinking some crazy stuff about my GT. I need someone to tell me to calm down and that my GT is not broken. LOL

Thanks in advance

I had a similar thing happen to me but the numbers started to do funny things too, i had a bit of moisture in the meter(rain)

No problems with the Sunray probe when I was not hipmounting. I did some more tests when I got back home. I noticed that when the extension cable for the hipmount was shook, I got beeps. I have not used the extension for hipmounting in a long time. But I never remember it doing that, making lots of beeps when shook or moved. I guess a better way to ask my previous question is this way. Do people have problems with excessive chatter while useing the 50" Sunray extension cable. If I plug the coil cable directly into the control box while hipmounting I get no falses. But I then can not use a probe or meter withoout the extension.

Thanks again

It sounds like a faulty connector on the extension. Hook up the extension to the long cable and then to the box and see if you get falsing when you jiggle the cable. If you do, disconnect the extension and see if the coil cable gets any falsing when you jiggle it. It could be a bad solder joint on one of the wires in one of the connectors.

I did some further investigation and think I found the problem. The 50" extension does NOT false when plugged directly into the search coil and into the control box. The 50" extension DOES false when going from the smaller 12" extension( the connector is up by the arm rest) that I have on the pole assembly which allows the control box to be mounted in the rear with a Sunray probe on the pole. So when I took the control box off and plugged in the 50" into the 12" I got false signals eratic beeping. But why not when the control box is pole mounted? Well i hand shook the 12" cable connector when plugged into the control box and got the falsing again. It seems that when swinging the detector with the control box on the pole I got no falses from the smaller 12" cable since it is secured on the pole. But once I plug in the 50" into the 12" and the cables are loose it falses. In short Thanks for your help and I am ordering a new 12" extension.

I know it sounds confusing...LOL

Thanks again
Jason
