Help on Tejon

New member
If you read my other post you'll see that I'm a total newbie, and the Tejon in my opinion is a mid level machine. I got a great deal on the Tejon and a Silver Umax, and plan on letting the wife run the Silver Umax. I've read the instruction manual several times, but it's kinda "Greek to me" if you've never held a MD before. I've probably spent 75 hours over the last couple of weeks study different detector models, reading everything I could find on another forum on Tesoro's, and watched every Tesoro Vaquero/ Tejon Youtube video I could find. The Umax was shipped to my in laws on Thursday and I'll get the Tejon in Jacksonville tomorrow. We hope to get to do some MDing next week on vacation, even bought a couple of TT "garden buddies" I think at Lowes today.

Can someone give me a quick 1,2,3,4,5 step procedure for start up and running it. I know how to GB, but haven't had time to figure out the steps or if it's really important in what order they are taken.

Don't have a Tejon so couldn't help much, sorry. But that machine is much more than a "mid level" machine. The Tejon is VERY highly regarded and used amongst serious relic hunters. All in what your gonna do with it and do you know how to do it.

wow...mid level...interesting opinion, seeing how you have never used one.

If you know how to ground balance...thats a good start. Once ground balanced, be sure and have your threshold set properly. Set your discrimination according to the instructions in the manual...to start. And then get out there and find some metal in the ground to dig up. It's a learn as you go thing. The more reading you do the better you will progress. It also helps to go along with someone who has some experience and can show you some short cuts.

When I started, I started with a silver umax. I learned by doing, and reading everything I could read about detecting. I have two Tejons, which I regard pretty highly, and in my opinion...they are quite a way beyond being a mid level machine...but they are only as good as the operator. There is no 5 step sequence that will have you finding gold rings and silver dollars on the first time out. It can and probably has happened though...so best of luck to ya.

I would bet you that on your first outing your wife finds more than you do...I would even bet you with an indianhead penny that i found with my mid level machine out in a wide open field:detecting:

Once you spend some time behind the tejon I believe your opinion of it will become very positive. After you use it, come back in here with some questions that come up as you are detecting...plenty of folks on here are glad to help.

Good luck....and remember....make sure you get a good ground balance.

Sorry I didn't mean to "offend" anyone by calling the Tejon a mid-level machine. I was simply going by the price range that it falls in. I also know that everyone raves about the fact that the Tesoro's usually out perform models costing several times more. I was actually looking for a less complicated machine to start with, but for half price, I couldn't help myself. I'm sure it will save me money in the long run of wanting to "upgrade". I did want a ground balance machine so that I could do some detecting on the beach. I know it will handle dry sand. How does it do on wet sand? We are about an hours drive from the beaches in the Tampa Fl area.

I'm sure that I'll be able to figure it out after a few test runs. (Once I actually get my hands on one and can read the instructions when I'm looking at the control panel.)

My advice is to go to the Tesoro website and download the owner's manual for the Tejon. Start reading it. I'm a Cibola user myself so I'm not familiar with the Tejon. The manual is a great place to start.

Yes, that was the first thing I did. I've read it a few times but it's hard to visualize the instructions if you've never operated an MD before. I watched a video on ground balancing (53Silver) and understand that now. Also know how critical that can be thanks to Monte's post. Then I saw the video on Threshold (Left4dead I think) so I have an understanding of what that is. Sensitivity I think is like squelch on the CB's back in the day. I think the key to setting it up properly will be getting each one set properly in the correct order so that they don't interfere with each other. Also didn't even have the detector until this afternoon, picked it up when we got to Jacksonville. Almost looks new except for a few scratches on the coil.

Reading the manual without a detector is kinda like reading a book to learn to fly without having sat in an airplane. Anyway got the detector, so now I'm off to study the manual with detector in hand. Maybe tomorrow I can get a little time on it. Gotta help the in laws feed about 400 head of cattle in the AM. Then in the afternoon it's off to Crestview to buy some groceries and have lunch. A couple of hours round trip.

Thanks everyone.

Not offended...just surprised. Thick skin here..gotta be that way...lol. It will take some time, but you will do fine with it. I have never run my machines in the water so I cant help you there, surely someone on here has and will chime in when they read this. Once you learn the tricks with the tejon, you wont look back. It's a great machine, and the better you know it...the better it will work for you.
