help needed please UK detectors

Hi all, This is my 1st post ,so I'm hoping this is right and finds its way to the right forum.

OK Ive done a small amount of inland detecting, and a very small amount of beach detecting with an early beach-scan ( which i found hard to master, in fact never did ). But now I really need to get out there, now with a bit more time on my hands and working all week in a factory I need the open space,,
So its advice i need ,
Machine . Do I go with a PI or should I go for something like a sovereign GT / Excalibur 11 ( I'm aware that the pi has no discrim but I'm on the understanding that if i discrim out the pull tabs I could lose out on the thin gold/silver ,not the idea.

Which machine C Scope cs4pi = very good value but is the whites surfmaster pi a better machine ? can we still get hold of the Deepstar ? cant see it advertised anywhere

If not a Pi,? then Excaliber 11 or Sov GT or ?

Any info would be really helpful and much appreciated ,
I live on the south east cost UK so if any one out there could give any guidance or tips this would really help ,
Thanks in advance for your time,, Kc
P.s love watching the videos Fantastic ,Hope soon to add some pics or vids of my finds

It's true you don't want to disc out pull tabs, or anything else if you're using either of the Minelabs. They will null out the small iron objects that the PI will detect, and deep at that. With the PI you have to be willing to dig deep for tiny pieces of iron like the inevitable bobbie pins, fish hooks and tiny bits of wire. The Minelabs will let you bypass all of that and save lots of time. I have both the Excal II and the Sov GT as well as the White's Surf PI Dual Field. The PI I haven't used but a couple of times on the beach because it is too time consuming imo. Maybe next summer out in the water will tell a different story but for now it's the Minelabs. Good luck with your choice and your hunting. --Jerry

Your best value imho would be a used CZ20 if you are beach hunting. Works good in minerilized sand and goes deep. You can dicriminate out the iron . I bought one used about 10 yeras ago and it is built like a brick, keeps on finding the goods.

HI K.C. i hava a cs6 p.i for the beach, the cs4's older brother and it is a good machine, deep and very sensitive , but all that digging can get a bit frustrating , and tiring after a while. I would go for the excal, sovereign or cz20 if i were you and save your back. Also the xs2a pro

All the above is true. One thing not specifically mentioned is if you don't get a totally waterproof machine, sooner or later you will get saltwater into the elctronics. It might be spray or just infiltration from the fog/mist. If you hunt where it's warm most of the time that may not be an issue but if you are from the UK I think you folks are known for cold foggy coast lines. Even if you hunt only dry sand, but why limit yourself to that, there's still infiltration of the salt air into the inside of the electronics affecting circuit boards, coil contacts, and battery contacts. At least that's been the experience with electronic equipment of those who live near the surf in the Pacific Northwest. Had a friend who lives 100 yards off the beach and anything that wasn't stailess or plastic, grew fuzz. Jim

There's a new pulse detector called the "Pulse Devil Nemesis"which claims to have full iron disc & great depth 16" on a 5p coin!
Look at the PI Technology forum,Post titled:Re:what ever happened to the "Pulse Devil"?is it finished yet?by NC-Dave-11/22/2009.
He is coming to England soon & in his post says if anybody would like to have a demonstration then contact him at his email address also in this post.

kc you live in the UK, if I lived there I would buy the deepest and best PI detector I could find. You live in the land of Castles, the iorn age and the land of great battles of Kings and knights. If I live there I shore would not go to the beach. I would find me a farm field some where to hunt. Gold rings in the UK have been known to be worth millions of dollars $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.Go to the beach if you must ,but remember all the Great Kings of age,in the UK. Happy huntting ,Ron Lord Naples, FL.
Garrett makes the Infinium LS which go very deepppppppppppppppppppp.

I use the Excal 1000, the CZ-21 and the Whites DFin the surf of Bermuda - here's my take on the matter.
The Excal is the most fun to use and the easiest as well, there is a subtle learning curve to get the maximum potential out of the Excal but it will work welll out of the box and frankly it is just good fun to hunt with it.

The Whites DF will hit hard and deep, it will cut through mineralization and it will deliver the goods - over time you will learn to not dig bobbie pins very often. It just isn't that fun of a machine to me but I've been hunting for a while now and the gold isn't the driving force anymore, not unless it is measured in pounds.

The CZ-21 is a great machine and falls in between the Excal and the Whites DF in my opinion. Good discrimination, good depth but not as much audio feedback as the Excal - it might be an inch or two deeper than the Excal but that is nothing on a beach or in the surf.

Get an Excal and have yourself some fun,

Some of our club members that go to Europe, use the Explorer SE PRO w/stock coil along with the platypus coil and wot coil from Coiltek on the UK plowed fields. Good reports searching for the non ferrous items in the soup of ferrous fragments everywhere. For water or beach, I echo those that like Excals, also like the Aqua Star or Deep Star Pulse for depth and coverage speed if trash is not an issue.

hi i live in wale s + i use sov g.t.[no notch ,no disc]dig every signal,i,ve got an excalibur but it won,t touch the g.t. for depth,i,ve also got a whites surfmaster, never used it over here but if you have one be prepared for deep holes + a bad back, used to use one all the time in europe til they went to the euro then the beaches are littered with the small clad coins + you will get fed up digging them.ease of use got to be the g.t.,no meters no screens easily hipmounted, just dig every good signal, good luck

Thanks so much for all your views, I'm still trying to decide..
Like the cheapness of the Pi (scope 4pi) and depth
But, like the idea of only digging good signals with the GT
What A choice ?
Is there a great difference in depth between them?
and is the Gt simple to use, do not want to take Manuel to the beach with me (if you know what I mean) , I do wish minelab supplied a instructional DVD with the Gt
Thanks for all your time Kc

The CS4PI ( I have one) is very sensitive and gets very good depth at the beach, It is hot on gold and silver. This machine like all Pis designed for beach work, will de difficult to use inland due to mineralisation and will be noisy. So this machine and others like it ( Beach Scan, Surfmaster ,Sand Shark, Seahunter) will be great at the beach but not so good inland.

The CS4PI has a variable Pulse Width control which can be used to provide some basic discrimination that will cut out bobbie pins but loose depth and sensitivity as a result.

If you want to hunt inland and on saltwater beaches you might concider a Tesoro Tiger Shark, SOV or Excalibur, TDI, The SOV is great at the beach and as a relic machine. The excal is a waterproof version of the SOV.

I have put my SOV on the back burner while I have been trying out newer machines, but I can see myself going back to this detector as my prime beach detector and using my Infinium when I want to search realy deep.

Hmmmm....no one in the U.K. ever hears about these rings worth millions of dollars though we do have a few people from England who post on the U.S. forums and always add a few noughts to the value of their finds.
As for detecting on land with a P.I. there's three thousand years of iron to deal with so until a true discriminating P.I. comes along people will stick with VLF's/FBS etc. The Infinium did so well that in the end the price had dropped by a third and now you have ask to have one imported.

If both land and wet salt beaches are to be hunted and you only want one machine the only choice is to go twin or multifrequency.
