Help needed making educated decision:yikes:

Help needed making educated decision about headphones. I've become a not so big fan of the full over the ear headphones. As far as I know, there are 3 types of headphones. The large, full over the ear coverage, smaller on the ear coverage and ear buds. I'm interested in the smaller on the ear type. In particular, ones that don't go over the top of the head for support, but are suported by going around the back of the neck. I recall seeing a video made by one of the pro guys wearing a set of headphones that sit on the ear and were supported around the back of the neck. Unfortunately, can't recall where I found the video. Any help, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Here you go , I think the mods will allow the link to stand
http://www.metaldetector.com/xp-deus-foldable-wired-backphone
The sound is terrific and you can plug directly into the CTX and use the built in volume control if you want to ditch dragging that ridiculous WM10 module around.
Best 20 bucks you will ever spend just take care to tend the cord with a clip or something to prevent damage.

Those Backphones are a great idea! I actually used to own a Deus(before I went to the CTX) and I thought the backphones were comfortable and sounded good. When I saw your post I decided to order a set. They are definitely cooler than a over the ear pair in the summer.

I feel the wm10 is a great device and I dont mind lugging it around as it is in a waterproof packet around my neck, totally our of the way and no sweaty headphones! I am wear ear buds. Great sound, cool, and I am not 'attached' to the detector.

Im using ear buds either on the machine or with the wireless unit. Its awesome in this heat wave we have been having and I can wear a straw hat to keep out the sun.

If I understand this thread correctly then the Deus headphones are compatible with the CTX. (?) I did not think standard ear buds would work with the CTX. Where can you buy ear buds that will work with the CTX not the WM10? Thanks.

As long as it's a 1/4" jack you can plug whatever phones you want into the CTX or WM10. Understand, you want phones that are going to respond to the signals the detector is sending them. There is a reason the higher end phones use high impedance components,it's not just for their health. Since you're looking for "on ear" phones,I'd suggest the Auvio models so,ethereal such as Radio Shack would sell. You will find out VERY QUICKLY that long thin straight cords are a veritable NIGHTMARE in the game of metal detecting. Finding on ear phones with a nice long coiled cord with strain relief is probably going to be hard to do.
Have you tried Killer B or Sunray phones?

You are correct in that you can plug the wired XP backphones directly into the CTX and they will work fine and shut off the external speaker. I think it has something to do with the wiring and where the grounding wire is connected. You will need an adapter to go from the 1/8 to 1/4". You can also plug the XPs into the WM10 and wrap the cord around the module and stick the whole ridiculous thing in your pocket or clip it to your belt if you don't want to run directly out of the CTX. I clip the cord to my shirt with one of those name tag clips and have detected daily for more than 2 years with the same vulnerable cord in both pristine parks and nasty woods without breaking it. The cord is a definite weak link that should be considered but for $20 how much do you have to lose ? As far as earbuds go , perhaps some of them work correctly when plugged directly into the CTX but they should all work plugged into the WM10.

Just a little FYI that may or may not be relevant to your situation tbw. You mention "3 types of headphones". Another type exists that is a SINGLE over the ear coverage, with nothing on the other ear.

The ones I refer to are called "rattlers" by Detector Pro. The name is appropriate, because they were originally designed with gold nugget hunters in rattlesnake country in mind. The ear left uncovered was able to hear a rattlesnake, for obvious safety reasons. I know of people who also use them for general detecting, in areas where ambient noise is not a problem, Fields, woods, quiet parks etc. They are lighter, cooler, yet with the full coverage on one ear the sound quality is still good.

Not saying these are for you, just another option.

This is what I use. Earphones with a band. Cheap, but the sound is decent. I wear a hat over them to keep them in place. I just thread the cord under the front of my shirt and plug it into the WM10 (though an adapter) which is clipped on my belt. Nice, light set up. The Deus backphones are a good option too; very light and comfortable. I have heard a few people complain that they don't fit well on larger size heads. Also can be a bit tricky to wear with glasses or sunglasses.
