help needed finding gold w/the SE

Not many deep coins at my local hunting spot...a schoolyard closed a few years back. i would like to switch gears and try to find some gold w/o digging everything and avoiding as many pulltabs as possible. i like ferrous sounds but would move on if someone has a valid technique.

I appreciate any guidance as usual.

There's really no way to do this without digging everything non-ferrous. Different size, weight, and carat, display in different places - plus because of shape they are generally jumpy (like a bent up pull tab). If it's a high school, your best bet is to aim for 10K - 14K mid-size rings (those worn on girl's necklaces or found in guys bookbags because they can't get used to wearing them) which are around the nickle range. That will keep you to a certain type of pull tab, nickles, and rings. You will miss others though, unless you just resign to digging it all.

Not sure what Minelab you are using, but I would assume most gold rings will ring in about the same. Like Shambler said, a lot of your gold rings will read about the same as pulltabs and with the different karats and the size of the rings it would be almost impossible to discriminate out any pulltabs without passing up some gold. I have found gold rings in digital with readings from 3 to 20 and again this is depending on the karat and size. My advice is to just dig it all and not only are you getting rid of all those pulltabs, you just might be surprised with a gold ring from time to time. You could make yourself a gold jewelery program if you have a variety of rings, but I'm like my buddy Lee who says, "if it beeps dig it." Good luck on whatever you decide to do and HH.

If you take a wide range of rings (size, weight, carat, shape), a jewelry program will look exactly like a pull tab, foil, and bottle cap program too. If that wasn't the case, considering the cost of gold, everyone would be using a jewelry program.

Guess I stuck my foot in my mouth. Making a jewlery program would be like digging pulltabs, but like I said, "if it beeps dig it." Maybe I should have said make a pulltab, foil and bottle cap program.

Why not just use jewerly mode and disc out the higher tones. Also you can reduce you sensitiity a lot just because you wont dig very many pieces of jewerly at say 8".... id reduce it to say 8 or 10 much like you would in a competition hunt. I beleave after digging a few of the pull tabs you could disc them out and still do quite well hunting rings.

Good advice so far. aluminum (foil, tabs, etc..) and gold share the same conductivity, per their relative size. That's the unfortunate aspect of discrimination :( If anyone tells you differently, that they think they can tell gold verses aluminum by the sounds (ie.: "gold sounds different"), or by the axis screen ("reads to the left of tabs/foil, etc...) the quickly take them out to the nearest inner city blighted urban park, and turn them loose. See how long they stick to their claims :)

Gold & Silver Rings Digital Readings with a SE........ settings : factory preset

All items found at the beach with a Minelabs Excalibur from sept 08 to sept 09

You can tell a Pull tab & a pop top with the excal by the tone, but I still dig just about everyone for some reason

My advice, dig everything under 15:01..unfortunately pull tabs fall into this area
