I was involved in trying to look for a very valuable ear ring that was lost in a short grassy area,Two friends one with an etrac the other with a new ctx had tried to find this item with no luck,After a few hours searching they placed the remaining ear ring on the ground and would you believe there was no responce at all in either open screen or dics modes. As I have an Xterra that are very sensitive to an metal I was confident in finding it,but a quick sweep over the existing ear ring, and hey also no responce at all and that was with no discrimination and also in gold mode. The item is clearly marked 9kt and is white gold surrounded by small diamonds, has anyone else had this problem. Also makes me wonder what else I am missing.I know that between the three of us we have talked it over and we are ground balancing etc correctly, maybe it is just the shape of the item even though we have tryed it lying down and also on its side..........a pic is included.....HELP.....KJ

i have been wondering about that, i have found a gold ring at 12-02 that was white gold.approx size 6-1/2
have been hoping to find a small gold charm like a small cross or something off a necklace.
hasn't happened yet.
anyone got a small charm they could test?
also found a small bracelet that registered 12-02.

Your ear ring is probably to small. Put your X-Terra if it is a 70 or 705 in prospector mode and then sweep ear ring you will here it. Good luck

The E-Trac and the CTX3030 has trouble seeing items that small thats made of gold or plat, it's a known fact.

To find an item that small you need a detector thats got a 12 - 22 kHz coil thats pitched at finding that type of metal ...... Gold Bug Pro / DP, X-Terra 70/705, AT-Pro/Gold are just some that will see that earing.

Thanks for the replys,I have an xterra 705 and even in prospecting mode there was no signal at all, this has me beat.

With which coil did you test this with for the 'no signal' ?

The picture looks like there is a hinged piece that closes over the post. If so, did you try closing that, so there was connection for a complete "loop". small gold rings that are broken don't always respond like you would think they should............HH

What you experienced is a common "problem." Most of the big name detectors won't hit on something like the earring above. I have recovered a lot of items like that, but you need the right tool for the job. When recovering items like this earring, I take out my Deus. I prefer my Minelabs for everyday hunting, but I have no doubt, whatsoever, that my Deus is better at sniffing out specific items, like the earring you are showing above. I did a lot of testing with items like this, and a few months ago on a recovery, my hunting buddy and I were looking for an earring almost exactly like the one you have above. I brought my Excal, CTX-3030 and my Deus for the recovery, whereas my hunting buddy brought his Excal and E-Trac. We could not hit on the missing earring with anything until I switched to the Deus. Now, it did not give a clear signal, but it did break the threshold in a spot where all other machines ran smoothly.

There is no one best machine for every job. If there was, we would all have it and be talking about it. If you are trying to find specific items, you need specific machines for finding those items. I am not taking away from the performance of the E-Trac here either, it is a fantastic machine, but when you are trying to find small low conductors, look at some of the options mentioned by BH_Landstar.

Hope this helps and good luck with the recovery.
