help need coil advice...

I got a Fbs 800 for Christmas and its still in the packaging... Plan on returning it and getting something different... The question is what to get. I was thinking about 6x8, sunray 8x, or The 4.5 x 7... For the most part I hunt parks and yards, so which coil would be my best bet for an option besides the stock coil ?

4.5 x 7 is the best for trash and gets pretty small targets as well.

I have the 800 coil. It's actually 7.25 inches. I find it works great. The grass is not always greener. You coil is made by ML and they know their machines. So it would make sense they know how to build coils for them as well. Maybe you need to slip it out of it's package and try it out without getting it dirty. Maybe put some plastic food wrap or something on it? I think they are not as popular because they are pricy.

I have been tempted to trust me  I could find next to nothing about them on the web and may have drawn conclusions because of it... Food for thought...

Here's an easy test. Put a dime on edge on the ground. Now put a nail about 1.5" to the left and right. Now, see if you can hit the dime. If you can't get the 4.5 x 7 because with the machine set right it will.

I have never tried the 800, but I do have a Sunray X-8 and have had great success with it. I do have a 6x8 that I bought this year. Just waiting for the spring thaw to try it out. I am sure you will do ok with what ever you choose. Good luck.

Go to the Explorer forum and check out Bryce Browns coil tests. He has tested most of the coils made for Minelab machines. He has done a great job in giving his time and knowledge on all of his tests and cuts no corners. He has no ties to the coil manufacturers or Minelab. Most if not all of your questions will be answered in his reviews. HH :minelab:

You already have it. It's as good or better than the others. I have compared it with the 8x6 butterfly and 5 inch sunray and it hits the same targets. Why not use it? It's a Minelab so it's good........... It's just 7.25 inches and gets into tight spots as well as most.

Hi at the minute the coil to have over here in the UK is the

Detech 13" Ultimate Coil. I've got one but I aint been out with it yet. But its supposed to be pretty sensitive to gold and silver.
See you around John.

I use the 6" or 4.5" x 7" Excellerator Coils - both are fantastic - the 4.5" x 7" is better at getting into tight spots than the 6" - both get real good depth ( 7" + Dimes) ,great in heavy iron and they are both very light - so you can swing them all day long. Myself, I like the "closed / no open spokes" type coils because they don't hang up on brush and field stubble.

I've read nothing but the best about the 6" x 8" coil from countless users - many use them as their primary coil - some say they hit as deep as the stock Pro Coil.

Here's a link to field tests on a lot of small coils - a ton of good reading here !

Good Luck !

4.5x7 is a awesome set up on the Etrac.
Check and see what NEL has for the Etrac. I hear they make a bullet proof coil too.
