Help????My Explorer does not have the depth that I need?

Hello,
I noticed that my Explorer will AIR TEST very well with 6" to 9" on a quarter and dime using the 10.5" coil. But! Out in the field it will not detect near as deep as in air testing. I've increased the gain to 10 to help the tone sound louder. But, still no improvement?
Also. By programing the unit to accept only old dimes and quarters, will this decrease the depth performance? And Pin Pointing! Does it need improvement? Thank goodness that I use my Sovereign with the SunRay Pin Pointer as hip mount. I just can't image anyone not using some sort of SunRay Pin Pointer.
If anyone can answer these questions. I sure could use the help.
Thank you,
Paul

Need a little more info. Paul. What is the sensativity setting and did you do a noise cancel? Also what cursor did you use to set the pattern for old dimes and quarters? Using a small cursor could have made the pattern to tight, and with all of the possibilitys factored in, like mineralization, iron masking etc. This could have an effect on the detector. Another question, are there coins at the depth you are looking for in the area you are hunting. If there is no deep coins there, no detector will find something that might not be there. One other thing to consider, if you are using a tight disc. pattern, You have to hunt very slowly. Most important Tip "all old silver don't hit High and to the Right of the Smart Screen" it can hit anywhere from center top and to the right and 1/2 in down the right side. However it should still give the High smooth tone. I hope this helps. Merry Christmas

Hello Bill, Bjorn and Neal,
Bill, Thank you for posting the reply. I went over what you hard said along with the email from both Neal and Bjorn. Between the three of you. I was able to set the unit up with much greater target response. Today, I went out and found 8 wheat pennies and one 1953 Rosie Dime using the 7.5" coil. What a difference it made when I switched over to Manual with a sensitivity set at 25.
My deepest coin was at 6 inches using the 7.5 coil. Thank you for taking the time to help me out. Before the adjustments, I spent over 8 hours of wasted time detecting with little depth. Now, my unit is set to recover deep targets.
Thanks again,
Paul
