Hey gcollins,
I have two Garretts, a Fisher,a Whites and now a Explorer II. I relic hunt and do some beach hunting while on vacation. Since I got the Mine Lab last year, I have not turned on any of my other detectors. To me the Explorer II does everything, its great for relic hunting ( I have dug mini balls at 18") and an outstanding coin machine. Do get the X-1 Sunray Probe its well worth the money. Its a big investment, but if you want the best, you have to pay for it.

Greg I can't comment on the X-TERRA 70 but I have used the 50 and it is a great instrument. So I'm sure the 70 is a good one also. Are you wanting an X-TERRA 70 for sure now ?

Mine is a Soverign GT with a Digisearch meter and a Sun Ray inline probe, a Tornado 10" coil, a Sun Ray S-5 coil and a Sun Ray S-12 coil.

Now, it is quite an investment but it works well and it works well anywhere but... and a big BUT... I do not think you could go wrong buying an X-Terra 70. It is a well liked detector and already has a meter. You will need to buy a probe which will set you back another hundred or so bucks. So what's that a little under 900.00??

I have around 1400 in my SovGT. You can buy a lot of detector for a lot less but really you wont do much better than the XT 70. The Whites MXT is another good choice for an all round machine.

I will problaby buy an X-Terra 70 for myself in the next year because I think it will be a FUN and ready machine. Really any machine that you spend tha time with will produce for you, as long as it's not a toy... and most aren't..

Oh yeah... once you buy the XT 70 you will begin to want the other two coils and I don't know how much they are but I bet they are around 200 bucks each... just guessing there though, so count the cost before you jump. You may change your mind when you figure it all up...

The XT is lighter than some machines though and that is a plus...

Hop this helps a little..

you might also look at the MXT. It's a great all-around unit. It can be used for coin, jewelry, relics and nugget hunting. It's a good beach machine, from what I understand, but I haven't had a chance to try it at the beach personally. It has the best selection of optional coils for all of the above venues, and you can swing it fast or slow with excellent results.

Another good, all-purpose, unit is the XL Pro. Good selection of coils too. It's a faster swing unit though.

A CZ can be used for all of the above types of hunting too, however it's a slow sweep, and geared more toward coins and jewelry, but will find relics, and works great at the beach.

I use all three of the above, and can therefor recommend them highly.

Hope this helps,

They're all great machines. I don't think you can buy a "bad" machine, unless it's a kids toy for less than $100. Tesoros, Minelabs, Whites, Fishers,Garretts--all good. But if you want a machine that you'll never grow out of, in my opinion, it's Nautilus IIb.
