IMHO, stick with "new" for a water machine!!!
They get abused in an extreme way and something is going to break. I've already had to send a couple of detectors in and both were still under warranty!!!
The salt environment is really harsh on detectors. The seals dry out, connectors get corroded, salt water can get into the electronics.....etc.
What type of hunting do you plan on doing the most? Is it dry sand, wet sand (both) surf, deeper water, diving??? This makes a difference as several types of detectors are available with strong points from each.
If you plan on just water hunting at the beach, I might suggest a pulse detector (PI) as they work better in that environment. However, most don't have any discrimination and you'll dig more junk with them. If you also plan on doing fresh water beach hunting, I would stick with the VLF machines as freshwater lakes have more iron and trash.
I would also look into the White;s Beach Hunter ID (around $675.00 new). The Beach Hunter ID 300 might be available now??? This one has the new Super 12 coil on it. I can tell you that it works really well! The list is $999.00, but I bet the street price is a whole bunch less?
Anyway, whatever you get good luck!!!!!!
