Hello all. I have myself an XLT. Enjoy it very much. My dad has an older Garret and we like to swing together when we can. Well his anniversary is comeing up and I was thinking about getting him the MXT. I know he likes the idea that he can pin-point with mine and some other features but I think the XLT may be a bit to much for him. What advise do you have? Is the MXT simpler to use? What do you like and dislike? Thanks Guys!

I am 69 and I have had many Whites detectors and I have had the XLT DFX MXT--I gave the DFX away because I like the the MXT so much-- Yes I think he will like it

The MXT is so much easier to use and i feel for most it will even do much better too. The MXT you dont have all these programs the XLT has and I know I have dug much deeper with the MXT than I ever did with my XLT. The XLT does have the tone ID I wish the MXT had, but I find using the relic mode i can get the same as I used to with the mixed mode on my XLT.
The MXT is truly a turn on a go machine as you just turn it on, set the knobs to preset and the ground tracking on,bob the coil a few time to ground balance and start swinging, just that easy.
The MXT is the best Whites I have ever used, so good I gave it to my wife to use. Like a oldtimer told me "be good to Mama and she will be good to you", my wife is very happy with it.

I have an MXT and love it. I am new to the hobby and researched detectors for about 3 months before settling on the MXT. You can't go wrong with it. And this is important: IT'S MADE IN AMERICA!

The factory preset positions work well and give very good performance
There are just enough and the right kind of adjustment options to set it up for your preferred style of hunting
For the most part all the modes and options work as advertised
Set up right, it can be a smooth operating machine but, you can make it noisy if you want
It truly is a detector for the beginner or advanced operator. Many make that claim but the MXT fits the bill!

Dislikes

The stock 950 coil. Very sensitive to target averaging and masking with poor ID accuracy at typical sites.
No round DD coils available from Whites (but the aftermarket makes em)
No big deal, but the VDI depth is not up to par on coins compared to some of the dedicated coin machines. Anything with a confidence bar at half or below you gotta go by the sound. This is a function, I believe, of the higher operating frequency needed for gold hunting.

Thats about all I can think of.

I found the White's 6X9 elliptic to do a good job, target seperation is much better than the stock coil and it handles iron very well with little falsing. Monte posted about a new 8" round DD that sounds like a good one too.
One of the nice things about the MXT is that there are now a lot of coils available for it. Check the older posts, there is a lot of info available on them.

Wanted to mention that if your dad likes the "feel' of the XLT give the XL Pro a good looking over. It offers similar performance in an analog format and has more than enough "adjustability" to give great performance for differing sites and conditions.

I also like the mxt i have been using it for gold mostly but havent found any but i am still very pleased with the machine

NO NO NO !--- There's too may out there already to compete with. This was supposed to be my little secrete.
