Help identify the gold looking coin. Doubloom maybe?

My 1st time out with my Bounty Hunter Pioneer XP was at the beach and you can see what I found ( Old rusted hinge, varies bottle caps, wrench, $2.18, 1 key, 3 fishing weights, 1 gold coin / relic ). I apologize for the poor picture quality, but am wondering if anyone can give me some incite as to the gold coin / relic at the bottom of the picture is. I contacted Mel Fisher's Treasures and I have to wait until next week to speak to a lab specialist, but the lady on the phone stated by my description that it could be a gold doubloom. Since this was my very 1st time metal detecting I was hoping to get a little help...Thanks

Thanks for the response...I have attached several more pic's as requested but they are still kind of bad. I have attached a picture of 3 replica coins that I found on ebay as a reference. The coin / relic I have found looks like the coin on the top as the markings and design that are legible look very similar. I look forward to your input.

hi weekend warrior, i hope for your sake it is the real thing. but... altho the photo is blurry, i'm seeing a base metal patina/discoloration coming out. or is it encrustations? it might be a gold plated souvenir piece. a real doubloon has no varying colors, just solid gold like the three in your last pic. try to use the macro setting on your camera. better pics would help. thanks, and hh,

Thanks for the advice... I did what you asked, but the pic's are still a little distorted. Yes, it was encrusted in shells. It was buried several feet down, don't ask me how my Bounty Hunter detected it. I was going to give up when I kept getting a signal from a cluster of shells. I actually broke the cluster down to find this item. When I contacted Mel Fisher's Treasure they also stated that it would not be discolored if it was real, but on the other hand could be real if it was encrusted in shells showing age, but for me not to clean it until I consult a pro so I don't destroy any of the markings. Heck, real or not its great to let the imagination sore as I had a blast my 1st time out! I appreciate all the help and support this site seems to give. I look forward to my next outing and will keep everyone posted on the outcome of this item.

O.K...I'm worse than a little kid. Despite what the true professionals said, I cleaned it myself with toothpaste and an electric toothbrush. It is legible for the most part and turns out to be all gold as I brushed away most the encrustation that was stuck to it. It turns out that it is from between 1684 & 1752 and has the Lima Mint mark on it. Can anyone guesstimate a value?

wow! congrats! it's one of the holy grails of the hobby! no idea of the value, they vary so much. wow... all i can do is say wow... how 'bout some after cleanup pics? wtg! hh,

What a cracker of a find, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! HH regards Nugget.

I took more pic's but it is hard to see the markings, just looks like a blurred piece of gold. I am very excited about the find and about the advice you all have given. The person I spoke with at the Mel Fisher Treasure Dept. also stated for me to go back to the same area and go over it with a fine tooth comb, but not to be disappointed if nothing else is found as single silver doublooms are found on Florida beaches from time to time, but gold ones are very rare. I am going to contact the museum on Monday to see what I need to do next determining a value, what ship it may have been from and so on. The coin can be seen in the following web page www.melfisher.com then select the Library Tab, Coin Data, select mint in the drop down bar & the markings match the second coin described Lima 8 Escudo cira. I will keep everyone posted!

does you machine have target i.d. if it does you may be able to i.d but the meter reading.

No meter to look at, just an annoying beep. My bounty Hunter is not set up for earphones, just an external speaker. I went back over the same area today that I found the gold coin in for about 6 hours. I received a nice lobster burn even with sunblock, may be dehydrated since I don't think seeing mermaids on the beach is normal. I did find 1 ear ring, 1 gold cylinder looks like it is from a broken necklace, 3 fishing weights, 1 hot wheels, and $1.45 in change. I sent an email with the pic's of the possible gold doubloom to the museum as they requested for viewing purposes. I will keep everyone informed once they get back in touch with me.

That is a dream of a find!!! WAY TO GO AND MY HATS OFF TO YOU! You have done what most of us dream of and are in the hobby for. Couldn't be any happier for you! Yes, do keep us informed on what occurs. I believe you will be hooked for life, no getting away from it now huh? Welcome, you make us Bounty Hunters proud. Way to represent!!!

Hook line and sinker!!! I have always wanted one but never took the plunge. My wife & kids bought it for me for fathers day and gave it to me a few day early so I went out to my parent condo to give it a test run. It's funny because my father and brother called me a nerd and said that I would look silly, but let me tell you my dad had a change of heart when I kept digging and digging just to pull up a clump of shells that was filled with a possible gold doubloom ; ). As stated I went back today to go over the area again, and my mom said both her and my father marked the area secretly with marks on the beach with alignment against the condo. I think I may have them hooked, just have to remain quiet about my findings(ha,ha,ha). I haven't been able to talk to my brother yet but am sure he will have a change of heart himself. Stayed tuned for coin updates...

Weekendwarrior your killing me!!! Have you heard anything yet???? I'm sure I'm not the only one dieing to hear about whats up. What model detector do you swing? You said it only had external speaker? Can't wait to here from you and were all praying for you.

Sorry, nothing yet...It's killing me also, it has consumed my every thought and I keep thinking about my next outing. I have called several times after the email communication only to get a general voice mail, or they recognize the number and have labeled me a stalker. I didn't realize this hobby would have such an impact on me. Sure I'm in constant turmoil waiting for a response about the coin, but the itch for my next outing seems to be just as bad. You know it's bad when you get promoted and the 1st thing that crossed my mind was this is only going to make me work more hours with less time to treasure hunt : (... Am I just over reacting since this is new to me? When do you stop beating yourself up wondering why you didn't try this hobby years ago?

Yup never! Some people call it a hobby, but most others call it a sickness! Maybe we are sick, But it sure feels goooood!:detecting:
