help id this rock

Hey guys been awhile since my last post have gone out probably 5 times this month and really only pulled a bunch of recent clad. I was at my mother in laws and pulled this rock out. It dosent set off the detector I found it next to a pop can. Looks like iron ore but not sure whatcha think. My wife thinks its a boeing bomb

It's probably not, BUT looks like the same stuff I was pulling outta the ground today, my father said it was "tar".. ? Ya think?

That my friend is Obsidian...Vulcanic Rock....I am no expert, but sure does look like it...is it sharp edged, and looks like glass???

Thanx bh that is exactly what it is. I have googled other pics and it is a perfect match. Now the only other question is why did I find it in Northwestern IL. Wierd

Because somebody packed it there and lost it.

Any steel mills near by. Looks like a piece of coke from a blast furnace.

The coke is also a possibility...I know IL has a lot of Chert rock, but that stuff is a sandy color I thought...Obsidian is Volcanic glass...super heated rock I think...
