That face is familiar but I cant think who it is. All I can think of is grandpa from the munsters ha ha.
 
If that is regular notebook paper that is is sitting on, the size would be 3/4 inch to an inch diameter. Looks to me like the guy in the background is the same in both photos, but the guy in front of him is different in both.
 
There appears to be gilt on a copper alloy medallion. Possibly a revoluntary war commemorative. The hair styles tied at the back are of that period. He dug this obviously.

Is there writing visible on one side.

Could you send a better picture taken face on and not oblique?

It has some resemblance to the 1926 SESQUICENTENNIAL COMMEMORATIVE HALF DOLLAR. If it is the same people it is a different artist rendition(hair curls, ect). Depicted are George Washington, the nation
