Help!!! I need to get me a new scoop.....

Gulf Huntress

I have been using an aluminum scoop for the last year and a half and it finally took a dump. I bent it last year, but it held up until the other day. We had it welded yesterday but I have bent it again, it is not going to last at this rate. So my question to you is what would be a better scoop without the weight. I have done some looking on the internet but thought why not ask everyone here on the forum what they think. Scott uses a scoop that weighs 11 lbs and I am not up for that weight dragging behind me, what are my options? Any and all suggestions are welcomed.

The wooden handle will be light and will float. They are also cheap to replace if you break the shaft as they usually fail before the aluminium does.
I have a fibreglass shovel handle with a wooden reinforcing dowel for my homemade PVC scoop. It's lightweight and strong.
You might try bracing the tubing by inserting a wood dowel inside the aluminium shaft if that's where your scoop is failing.

Good Luck,

No dice, as her scoop is a 1 piece aluminum unit. I need to get her a stainless, that she won't break or bend, but that weighs about half as much as the Gulf Hunter 11 pounder.

GH the scoop that i build & use weighs 6.5#'s and it wears me down. i hunt in the water only and have a sifter that i attach to my belt with a rope and simply put my scoop on it when not in use. it really makes a differance. not only does it take all of the work out of carrying the scoop, i no longer spend a bunch of time looking for targets in the bottom on the scoop. I find a target, scoop, double check, hole and dump scoop in sifter, move on to next target it has increased my recovery's and with less work!

the sifter wouldn't work well if you were in big waves (i used it on lake michingan saturday, wave height 1 to 2')or obviously if you were hunting wet/dry sand. i've included pictures of the scoop and sifter.

hope you find a system that works well! hh

might try joe of demarco detector sales(joe south jersey)
he sells a great stainless steel scoop that only weighs about 7 lbs
and is well made and heavy duty

Here's the Scoop I have been using this Season. All Stainless including the 1/2" mesh. It works great in the dry sand, wet sand, and water. The basket is 6" in diameter and 12.5" from the tip of the blade to the back of the footpad. The handle is 48" long and 1.25" in diameter.

The sand here in Southern NJ is very dense so even in the water the sand stays in the scoop long enough to get it out of the hole. Once out of the hole the water sifts the sand out of the scoop pretty fast. In Va Beach where the sand is a lot coarser is sifted faster but still worked well in the water. It worked great in the wet and dry sand in Va Beach. What I like is that it can be used equally well on any part of the beach.

I dig some really deep holes here and I need to be able to move a lot of sand easily.
What do you think? I really like the look of that scoop.

low tide tim on left with bill babbs scoop

real hollywood with alum. scoop by someone else, both hollywood and sharkhunter have new alum. scoops, but i do not know who makes them

similar to bill babbs

It is built like a tank. The welds are 100% and the workmanship and materials are top-notch. It does weigh a bit at 7 pounds but the back saver handle will make it easy to carry to the beach and lift the gold out of the sand! I am sure this will be the last scoop I ever buy.

and a friend of mine named Ed who posts on the Forums from time to time has been using one up there all Summer and said it is working great. Maybe he will see this Post and add his thoughts. Since the scoop is 6X12 you can get quite a bit of sand in per scoop. But having never been to Bermuda I can't say for sure. As you can see from the pix the sand where I live is very fine grained and very dense. Only 3-4" of the scoop is in the sand and yet it's able support the scoop :) Digging here is hard and in the past I have broken many scoops on our beaches. I have broken every 1" diameter SS or Aluminum handle scoop I have ever had due to the density of our wet sand. So far I haven't broken any 1.25" SS Handles.
