Help I.D. Button, found along with musket balls

McDyver

New member
found this assortment of musket balls, nails, spikes, hook, button, cast figurine, pocket knives, copper spear point, and bullets in 6' of water.
The button has an eagle and a shield and on the back it reads S & W cincinnati.

I think the figurine is an anchor?

anyone care to guess how old???

Thanks for looking!

I don't have Albert's in front of me but the button looks early British Navy, probably early 1800's. Been awhile since I dug one of those. Nice finds, wish I could have been hunting with you.

At first I thought it was an anchor in the shield which would look like the British Navy I thought it was. I checked the backmark in my book and the S&W (W is listed as possibly Enos Woodruff, a clock maker who was known to have dealt in military goods in the 1820's) . This backmark is on c. 1812-1815 one piece pewter infantry buttons. This made me look closer and see that it is an "I" in the shield, not an anchor.
