Hi guys. I need some help. I bought a BH pioneer 101. I have learned how to find coins and silver, but how can I find anything made of gold without having to go to "All Metal" . If I do go to that setting. I end up digging tons of trash. Right now I have the settings set with the discrimination all the way up and sensitivity all the way down. The switch at the lower right hand corner is switched over to disc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Flip the switch to Tone mode, take a new zinc penny and set the disc dial so that the hi low tone breaks up on the penny. That will give you a solid low tone on a nickel, large foil and modern tabs (which is where the gold hides). Then go out and dig low tones until you find a keeper.
So will that cut down on having to dig a bunch of trash? When I first started, which was not very long ago. I told myself that I would just dig every signal. Uh. That lasted about a day. I just can't do that. I couldn't even take three steps before the detector would go off. Thanks for your reply!
It detects metal. When running in Tone mode iron and small foil is auto rejected. Then the tones will tell you what kind of metal is under your coil. The High tones will be coins. The low tone (for gold) will be gold range trash. The Broken High/Low tones will be mostly trash or new pennies. So yes, it will cut down the amount of trash you are digging and (per your request) it will help you find a gold item if you get your coil over it. Try it for a few days.
I will definitely try that. Thanks a bunch. I'm working on getting a AT-pro, so I will have to learn it too. I really want a Detector that will do it all. A "One stop shop" if you will. I guess with any detector there is a learning curve.
Hang in there, Tommy, each outing is a learning experience. Dig and learn what those tones and variances in the tones are telling you. While no single detector will do it all well, the A T Pro is a fine all around choice. Good luck! HH jim tn
One rule of thumb is "Your not ready for a new machine till you've mastered the one you got."
At least a Thousand coins and enough to have paid for the machine you now have.
Just started swingin n diggin here in So Carolina's upstate. Specifically Pickens County. Just bought my first BHLR Pro. I have a lot to learn.
I'm 68 and it keeps me off the couch.
Met a great bunch of folks from the Oconee County Club that have been very helpful also.
Always looking to reach out for advice, especially about getting the best out of my machine.
I have read articles on ground balancing and still a little ignorant on fine tuning it. Do I simply pump the coil up and down while holding down the ground grab button whenever I enter a new area when unsure of what kind of ground I'm in? If there is more to it than that, please advise.

Before you ground balance, use the all metal mode to scan the ground that you are ground balancing over & make sure there is no metal in that ground. Then pump the coil & ground balance it.
I have been using the Land Ranger Pro for over a year now. The weather finally warmed up here and I was able to go metal detecting this past weekend. In the last three times I noticed that the machine worked fine for the first hour or so and then acted erratically with signals jumping from 40s 50s 60s 70s 80s on one target. It is all over the spectrum. I don't believe I was at a trashy area. It was a very well maintained park. Or I might get a signal as 79 but when I passed the coil again the signal disappeared. but It was like this for 30 to 40 minutes. I tried to shut it off and turn it back on. It stayed the same way. Also, I used the ground grab button, I pumped the coil up and down for a few seconds, I noticed the two digit number appeared on the screen but I don't hear anything. Anyone experienced the same problem as I did.
