Help for a Silver Umax user?

Brendan

New member
Hey guys,
My Silver Umax seems to be having trouble with falsing at the moment. Even if an item is disced out, it will go off on the first swing over the item, won't go off the second time, then go off again. Has anyone else had this problem?
Also, are there any good video's of Umax's in use out there?
Cheers,
Brendan

Take off coil cover and make sure it has been cleaned and check your battery, hope it helps.

Make sure the coil cable connection is not loose. Also make sure the cable is not flopping around.

If all else fails, call and speak with a Tesoro technician (1-928-771-2646 ). They are always very knowable and super helpful.

Brendan, I have similar problems with mine. In some areas it will beep at the end of my swing. I go back over the area and nothing. Then it happens again. It is VERY Frustrating. I run my disc hi so I don't think it is because I am in trashy areas. I have sent it back to Tesoro and they can find nothing wrong. Even if I turn the sensitivity down it does not help. Rusty explained to me that it could be from the abrupt stop of the swing that causes it. He said turning down the sensitivity should solve the problem but it has not. He also said the internal sensitivity may be too hi and I may need an internal adjustment to bring it down. It seems to only happen in certain areas. This and the lack of depth when air testing caused my to pull the trigger and buy a Vaquaro. I am very happy with it but I have noticed that I still run into the same problems at the same areas as with the silver. Just not as bad. Even switching frequencies did not seem to help. I believe it is some type of outside interference but what kind I have no clue. Also, why does it happen at the end of the swing???

Does it do the same in an air test? Sounds like a bottle cap and the uMax discrimination is telling you not to dig.

Diggler, it does not do it during an air test. Also, when I say area I mean a large area as big as a football field. It will basically not allow you any good signals to distinguish from.

One other thought. Tesoros do not have auto ground tracking so if your mineralization changes from low to high, high to low . . . When you get this tone popping up, check your GB. Just something else to consider.

You say "even if an item is DISC'ed out" it will beep one way. Does it do that on trash only or... If you set DISC to ZINC it will signal on a NICKEL one way?
If you shake it aggressively in the air at waist high with sensitivity around 5 does it make a sound?
If it does not false while air testing, what if you find a clean patch of ground and put down a quarter or dime? Does it work then?
I have only ever had to return 1 item to Tesoro for trouble and it was a coil that got water inside. The brown donut is almost indestructible though.
As someone asked earlier, are you sure the cable is not flapping around on the lower shaft near the coil? No steel toed boots on? Not accidentally switched to ALL METAL?

Thanks everyone for your help.
Diggler, it is usualy happening when I go over a piece of junk ie a piece of iron or foil. There is always something in the hole, it's just junk!
Maybe something is wrong with my discrimination? If I have the disc set at 5c, it will blip on foil:unsure:
Cheers,
Brendan

Is this a new detector or used? Mine did that when I over adjusted the g/b trimmer too positive-will do the same too negative.

Brendan,

The problem you are experiecing may be location, if there is lots of metalic junk in the area you are hunting at, nobody, even very experience detectorists.............could hunt in that situation.

Foil for example in small slivers will register as foil, take that same foils and wad it up to the shape and size of a golfball, your detector will repond to that target as a high conductor coin like 25

Slingshot, the detector was bought second hand from Canada (Only way to get them cheap in Australia). It was advertised to be in as new condition.

Hombre, The places I've been doing are reasonably junky, but most of it is deeper iron that shouldn't go off. Most of the time I can work out that it's junk by the size of the tone, but it's still annoying. On the other hand, there is also a bit of small foil around, which is still going off, even when I run my disc above foil.
Cheers,
Brendan

Brendan,

Welcome to the real world of metal detecting, I hunt some older use sites that have modern traffic and the aluminum trash is overwhelming some times. I dug a 1930's 10Kt. gold class ring (owner deceased) in an area that was plagued with lawn-mowed beer can slaw with an analog White's 5900 Di Pro SL. I know this is the Tesoro forum, and I'm mentioning another brand of detector, BUT the meter and true non-motion all-metal mode with the accurate depth meter of the White's helped descriminate out most of the small can slaw. I went back to this site with a Bandido ll

what coil you using on the silver?

it really is about learning sounds  you will hear items like can slaw, foil etc but wont get a solid lock on them if they are discriminated out, the good old Tesoro shake can tell you a lot about a target. its a very valuable tool. also good for pin pointing well it is for me anyway.

keep on swinging and keep on diggin pain is the best way to learn  and we all come home with trash its just how it is more trash i bring home the more goodies i find it seems to even itself out some how. :clapping:

Since your Silver uMax is not under warranty, why don't you try adjusting the Ground Balance? There is only 1 POT inside to choose from, and kinda hard to mess anything up. Find a clean patch of soil, put it in all metal, and tweak away. Could help a bit and might gain a little depth too.

The silver U-Max will not reply to iron targets in the Disc mode, you might get a chirp.
I don`t know if you are doing air tests or field tests? You need to be more specfic on your problem,

I have the Silver Umax and used to get the beeps at the end of my swing. I don't get them anymore. It turns out I was swinging it too fast and I think I had a slight lift to the coil at the end of my swings. Slow it down, and it will work better and stop the phantom beeps.
