Help Finding Old Treasure/Metal Detecting Magazine Article

Batch

New member
Hello all!

Allow me to preface this request with a story...

I used to manage a couple of record stores (yes, vinyl records!) and hated when customers would come into the store and say, "I heard this song on the radio just now and I don't know any of the words or the title and I can't even hum the tune but it was sung by some guy...do you have that record?" AAAARRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!

Now for my request...

Way back in the mid-to-late 70's there was a short story in a treasure/metal detecting magazine that featured a young man who had amazing AURAL detection/discrimination skills. He could tell by tone with great accuracy whether the coin in the soil was a nickel, dime, quarter, etc. The paraphrased tagline was something like, "If he starts to give the date on the coin from the tones, we'll call shenanigans." Does anyone remember that article and can you point me to the particular magazine? (I just heard you all go, "AAAARRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!")

I understand chances are slim and any help is greatly appreciated - I have just always wondered if he is now a "Famous Detectorist".

Thanks for going "AAAARRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!" with me.

Respectfully,

Batch

Howdy Batch--

A friend of mine gave me 3 boxes of old treasure magazines. They are mostly from the 80's & 90's but I believe that there are a few from the 70's. I have given several away to interested people on my Meals on Wheels route and to people in nursing homes. I will check for an article that you described. Wish me luck! Best of luck to you and...

Oh Great and Mighty Nut Finder...

Thank you so much for going through the trouble of looking through your magazines! I had hoped the article might just pop into someone's head. I will certainly pass along your positive Karma by trying to help someone out with my own good deed. I do not know WHY that particular article has stuck with me but I have always wanted to "follow up" as it were. Although my memory is not the best, it seems that it was like a one page "last word" story on the last page of the magazine with a photo of the young man with a find at the top 1/3 of the page...but I certainly am not sure. I mean, with my memory it could have been a multi-page feature story although that does "feel" right.

Thank you again so very much for your time! If you do happen to find it, I will happily buy it from you or donate money to your choice of charity for it. (I still don't know why it is so important to me!)

Best of luck out in west Texas!

Respectfully,

Dave

You might ask editor@wetreasures.com The magazine has been around since 1966!

Also try Losttreasure.com as they are the only 2 magazines that have been around that long that are still being published.
