Got a SE with 6x8 and 10x12 sef coil and x-1 probe. I'm from Texas, went on a hunt in Virginia. Settings: conductive, sen 20's man and auto, normal resp. IM 19. Getting targets no problem, when I went to use Probe I kept getting low sounds on everything even my hand. I tried changing probes, still same problem. The only thing that worked was setting sen. to 12 man. and re-started machine before using probe. I also noise cancelled a million times, still same low sound with probe? Never had this problem in the desert, could it be the east coast soil? Please help

Try disconnecting all the cables... especially the one going to the box. Reconnect them... see if that helps. Mine came loose at the box once and i thought the coil went. If not, disconnect the x1 and go directly to the box to see if its your probe. If its the probe go to the Sunray forum and talk to Ralph. Clean your coil cover. Next you might try using the other battery pack or clean the connections. With IM 19 and in auto sensitivity you should have a sweet even threshold thru the probe. Some places do have cinders in VA which could affect the probe.... but sound more machine than soil. Ive hunted in VA and didnt have any problem. You can get too much sensitivity and the probe will react with falsing.... but not at your settings. Im sure Chris will have some questions and answers as well.

Stafford county has the red dirt that is like powdered iron. I've been to 14 of the Diggin' in Virginia hunts and my explorer wouldn't work right in that soil without turning the sensitivity down to almost nothing. That red soil is where a pulse machine is definitely needed. There are some they will say they can set the Explorer up to hunt in the red soil but I tried everything and never could get it to settle down enough. Don't get me wrong, anywhere else I hunt, it's all I use. But in Stafford County VA, it's a pulse machine for me.

I hear yeah! Very red soil...... Ft. Powhatan, james river. I'm not having any false signals now with probe, even when sen is 31, I'm back in Texas! I guess it was just the area, now I know why most of these relic guys hunt with Tesoro and Fisher... Glad I didn't have to buy another probe or machine..

Thanks for the help...

That sounds like a loose cable, or a dirty connection. I always carry a spray can of contact cleaner with me. One place I hunt as a cable TV line running down the back of the field, my machine goes nuts around it.

Sounds like you may have gotten your answer.... no one knows the area like the locals. Even here in Ind.ive noticed the soil in the fields is totally different from the parks. I assume because of the rusted iron, hot rocks, and all the ferterlizer. You dont get much depth in that kind of soil and the probe does act up if you have too much sensitivity.

There were just a few places where my probe was picking up all kinds of signals in the hole but when you came near the actual metal in the hole you knew it. Sounds like your probe had a problem. I've been through three X-1 probes so far. Guess they could have been fixed but just replaced them. The last one has a loose sensor inside the rod and you can hear it rattle when you shake it. Gives you some nice tones when you do that too. It would work "okay" when you turn the sensitivity way down. The first one got the wires twisted inside when I would screw the connecter on. I had that repaired a couple of times but couldn't count on it always working.
I'm curious as to what part of the property you were digging on? I went all over the 3000 acres and really didn't experience trouble except a spot or two near the fort. Oh yeah, the beach sand had alot of iron in it too.

Hey NealNoIN, I started out by the huge power lines, I thought that was my problem.. I left the area and worked the Fort, most feed plots and all the woods away from power lines, still same problem. I know everyone says it was a probe issue, but I changed out the probe with another one and I still had the same problems. I'm back in El Paso, TX with no issues with my probe! The only think I can think of is the my machine got wet, or the humidity, it did rain the first day. I don't know what else to say??? Thanks for the info to all..

The ground here in Stafford is perfect in most areas and my Explorer XS kicks butt. You are right about that iron dust dirt. I used my Explorer at 3 DIV hunts in Culpeper and actually did good. I even dug a US boxplate but I figured I was getting about half the depth I was used to getting so I bought an Infinium. I have used the Infinium at the past 4 DIV hunts and all I can say is WOW what a difference.
