HELP DECIDING:shrug:

Looking at upgrading from my Master Hunter 7 since I have the detecting bug. I have looked at all the detectors and I am isolating down to a few. The gtp1350 tends to get better reviews than the gti2500 or is that because its in a different class? Whites dfx seems to get really good reviews. Open to all suggestions.

You mentioned the White's in here, but you know what the Garrett users will say. I say go to the Metal Detecting Forums and see what detectors the people with the best finds will have.

The GTI 2500 has sizing ability and several other bells and whistles. However, it also has a true all metal mode which its greatest advantage over the GTP 1350 and GTI 2500 is depth. Now depth isn't the main reason you should consider with the purchase of a metal detector, as we all know that most of the old/new coins are in the top 6-7 inches anyway. But you may also like relic hunting , in which case the GTI 2500 has the advantage. But then you also spend more also. Both machines are awesome. Below is a link for comparison purposes on these and other Garrett detectors.

I entered the hobby with an Ace 250 early this year. I really got into it and after finding about 700 bucks worth of loot with the 250 decided to upgrade. I had a few dealings with the staff at Garrett and they were so easy to deal with and always bent over backwards to assist me. I also read a few stories about people with older Garrett machines who sent them to Garrett and they were upgraded for free even if out of warranty. At this point I was between Garrett GTI 1500, Garrett GTI 2500, Garrett GTP 1350 and Minelab Explorer. (Also looked at a few Whites models.) I read all the forums for months and months. Asked lots of questions (you could go back read them.) And ultimately decided on the GTI 2500. I have only dabbled with the all metal mode (really does go very deep) but it's there when I need it. The learning curve on the 2500 was not nearly as steep as I thought it would be and it only took a day or two until I started finding tons of goodies like I did with the 250. I found great people on all the forums most of whom were willing to help out a newbie. I still think the folks here on the Garrett board are among the nicest and most helpful. Most 2500s are still sold with the large imaging coil a carrying bag and headphones. I have just begun to use the 12.5 inch coil. Great for covering large areas but heavy. Headphones are really nice. Bag is nice but the detector has to be broken down to fit in. Not useful for short storage in my opinion but would be great for transporting long distance or for longer term storage.

To summarize. I love the GTI 2500. I dig a lot fewer junk large targets. I still dig a few just to see what they are. I find it extremely easy to use and the performance is great. It is fairly heavy but after using it for a week I didn't notice that at all. You can't beat the folks at Garrett who are extremely helpful.

Finally. Uncle Willy (here on this forum) is probably the best source of information about Garrett detectors outside of Garland, TX. You can't go wrong listening to him.

The best way to decide is to go to a dealer and try each one out. They are all good machines, it's just a matter of personal choice. The best machine is the one that is the best for you - not the one that is best for someone else. The 1350 is a great all around machine and quite popular. The 2500 goes deeper, has more features, and has all metal that gets awesome depth. It also depends on what type of hunting you will engage in and where. All detectors do not operate the same everywhere. You need to determine what kind of soil you have. If you have high mineralization then you will need a machine that can penetrate it.

I ordered the 2500 even though the guy at kellyco said I may want the 1350 due to California dirt. I don't know, I figure the 2500 has enough features to do as much plus see the pretty little image that everyone says is a placebo. I am sure it will work very well and I am not relying on it to get me back from the moon. Your further input would be appreciated.
Thanks Rob.

I think you'll be happy. I don't know what California dirt has to do with anything. The 2500 is designed to cut through the Australian soil - some of the toughest in the world. With it you can hunt anything anywhere. Good luck and keep us posted.

I use to visit Kellyco's store and watch the sells people so I could learn about the detectors. I butted in one time when the sells person left for a moment. I thought the man would like a higher priced detector. I was selling him on it. The whole thing got messy and the deal almost fell through. The man was confused, but bought the lower priced detector. The sells person told me that they talk to the person and see what their needs are and what they can afford. They do not try to sell you the top end detector just to make a bigger profit. Most of the time a first time buyer doesn't know what he want for sure. They want a happy customer, not a big sell. He was profiling you to see your needs. He was trying to select a detector to meet that need and make you happy. Not any more or any less.
I apologised to the sells person. People have their opinions about Kellco. I have mine. I have respect for the sells people and know personally that they will bend over backwards to please the costumer. They have to make a profit, but they have done things for me that I didn't think any store would do. Watch out for some of the freebie's. They are cheep Chinese junk, but hey, they're free. Stick to the brand names.
The sells people are MD'ing fanatics. They love talking detecting and can't wait to get off work and go MD'ing. Each sells person has their own display case at the store to show off what they have found MD'ing.

The sales person I dealt with was very nice and I could tell he was matching my needs. I just like fancy equipment

The best finds do not determine the merits of any machine. That's a fairy tale adhered to by some folks Passing the coil over the right target with any detector determines great finds.
