Help Deciding on Metal Detector for 6 year old

My son will be turning 6 next month and has asked for a metal detector. He goes with me on short trips and is pretty good finding finding things. I have a Prizim V and he cues in on the sound and then looks at the display. He is very good with it at the beach, but also good at home in the Virginia clay. Because of his age, should I go with a kids Bounty Hunter Treasure tracker Metal Detectors or something like a Prizim II or III. The main concerns I have are the size of the unit, weight, and complexity.

At 2.5 pounds I don't know why the P3 wouldn't work? Or you could give him your P5 and you buy a P6?

if he's used your Prizm V at the beach and inland and seems to be doing 'OK' then the real question might be are YOU satisfied with the Prizm V for your own hunting?

If you just want a lower-cost unit, get a Prizm II or III or IV, used or new.

If, perhaps, you wouldn't mind an 'upgrade, consider letting him make use of your Prizm V and you could get yourself a Prizm 6T. They would share the same search coils and with the 'shooter' coil to be out soon that can make them both handier.

What is important is to continue to develop a great hunting buddy! It's great to have a child who takes a serious interest in having fun with Mom or Dad.

I agree with Monte - give the kid the Prizim 5 since he has a good idea on using it, then get yourself another machine. Only problem is if the kid takes both:blink:

Since I am happy with the Prizm V, it had not crossed my mind about upgrading. For the type detecting and frequency that I can go, it is a great machine.

If I did this, I know he would love the detector and already be comfortable using it. Thanks for all the comments.

I bought the Bounty Hunter Jr for my daughter for Christmas but she is only 4. I can easily see where she will outgrow it in a year.
I guess my point is to get him something that will last for a few years and if he has to grow into it, that's a good thing as long as he can
find things with it now and it's not that heavy/complicated.

Good Luck!

I also bought 2 BH. Jr for xmas for my 2 kids and they love it. Have already found some coins with it. The price was my main reason for getting the Jr. Just in case they decide they are bored and don't want to detect anymore. But after there first trip out with them I don't think that will be a problem. Good luck:thumbup:

I realize this is for whites but I say the ace 250 would be easy to handle for a kid!

Lot for the money but...make sure to take care with them. (Store right, transport properly and careful with banging the coil.) Guess they are decent little machines... if taken care of. Having said that... a used mid grade Whites product would be the best of both worlds.

I bought a Tesoro Compadre for my six year old grand daughter. Hardly any weight to it. She loves it. (I think the headphones are heavier than the machine!)

I would only suggest the Garett Ace 250. I use a couple of Minelab Detector's and I am suprised on the depth and accuracy on this little impressive green machine. Sure wish Garrett had this machine when I bought my Garrett Groundhog in about 1979-goldnugget-Charlotte,N.C. gosports1@aol.com
