Hello everyone. As you can tell by my username I am from northern Indiana, about 40 miles S/E of Lake Michigan. 2 years ago I bought an MXT, used it a couple of times and put it in the corner of the room where its stood, untouched, ever since.

Problem for me is in this area there just isn't much public land where a person can search and when you do find an area it has been searched to death before you get there. I have scouted some interesting areas but I am a little too shy to just walk up to a property owner and ask if I can metal detect on their land. A few questions I have are ... What areas do you look for, where do you start? How do you approach a property owner, etc.?

It really bugs me to see my detector just sitting there and not being used. I really need to overcome my shyness and just start asking I guess but it is just so hard for me. Any suggestions would sure be appreciated. Thanks.

Steve

Boy do I ever know THAT feeling.
I don't like approaching people either. Its just one of those
things one has to over come. Its hard for some people and others
wouldn't think twice about it.
What might help is to contact other metal detect delear/s in your
area. Maybe you guys could all get together and go out together
until you develope a wider comfort zone. I'm sure they had the
same problems in the beginning. There are probably groups up your way
that get together.

No one ever finds everything. There is always stuff other people miss,
and besides, the local parks are always full of people dropping things
and loseing them.

Is the 950 standard coil the only coil you
have? If so you might invest in a Whites 5.3 coil for trashy areas.
Also try just running it in relic mode. I think you'll be happier with the
result that way.

Hmmm, Some one please remind me.How many years in jail can a guy get for letting an MXT sit ignored in a closet during good weather week ends, Isn't that like spousal or child neglect or abuse?:yikes: LOL just kiddin welcome to the group. Ever thought of advertising or a magnetic sign on your car? Treasure finder etc with a phone number

Yes

How many years in jail can a guy get for letting an MXT sit ignored in a closet

Then I won't even start about the dust and cob webs!!! LOL.

My plans right now are to spend the tedious winter months learning as much about the hobby and the MXT as I can.

I can't seem to locate the book mentioned above. Can someone please help me out on where to order one. Thanks.

Thats an easy one. Check one of the sponsors of this forum that carries Whites brand, like Kellyco.
Merry Christmas,
John

We were at my parents yard detecting and the neighbors laterally came out and said we could do there yards also. There has been a silver/gold-mine there in that little town. Start talking to friends, co-workers, etc. about detecting and bring up how you would like to hunt their yard, etc. But make sure you don't damage the ground. Leave it the way it was, if not better. You'll be surprised of the "go ahead....hunt my yard" answers. Good luck and get the dust off of that MXT and start having some fun!!!!
