I'm working on birthday 63 in May,... and live in the middle of Colorado, [I've lived in a ten square mile area all these years] ...........we have a motor home and are planning on just moving slowly around our state, [now that we have time to really see it!!

i have purchased my first gold pan and sluice and a coin master pro detector..............just for things to do.........i think that the detector will get more use than the pan and sluice......................at least i can find something with it!!!........

it seems, though, that i have an urge to collect more of these detectors [is that normal???].........

are any of the old detectors on eBay worth buying and experimenting with???.............or has the technology in my [not so expensive coin master] far exceeded the old technology............

i'm only asking because i love to tinker [and tweak]........... and i try to keep learning with every little hobby i experiment with........but i really don't need to collect anything that i can't actually use.......i have enough to get rid of already!!!!!............

well anyway i'm glad i found this forum........you sound like a nice bunch of people.........

Old detectors are alright if you can get them at the right price. If you have a local radio garage sale program or Craigslist are good places to find some detectors. I bought a Garrett deepseeker from garage sale the other day for 15.00 and sold it a week later for 75.00, I played with it enough to know that it was still working good and sold it off.
My first detector was an old Coinmaster I bought back in about 1984 and had it up until 2007 found alot of good stuff with it and sold it for what I paid for it. I now have a DFX and will never get my money back out of it except in fun. What ever detector you have as long as you learn to use it you will find stuff.

Welcome to the forum djames and welcome to the "addiction" of metal detecting.

Yes it is normal to want to have more detectors. Especially if you buy an "entry level" detector. You will soon outgrow it and want something with more bells and whistles. Most of the top-of-the-line detectors are preprogrammed with "turn on and go" programs for the beginner. I'm on my third and already thinking about my possible fourth. If money isn't an object for you since you like to tinker and tweak then by all means buy a modern detector. In my opinion they are far superior to the older models. You can pick up a used detector like rtoney's DFX or a Whites XLT or MXT for a reasonable price. Then you can tweak and tinker away and get good results for the time and effort you put into learning to use them.

rtoney, get Clive James Clyinck's book, DFX Gold Methods, and study it. Just one or two nice gold rings can more than pay for that DFX!!

Yep it does not take too many finds to pay for a detector, I just got permission to hunt a place across from my office. It just looks like an old house but the doctor that uses it now says he was told there used to be a gambling place in the basement; just waiting for it to warm up a bit now.

it's been to dang cold and snowing here in the last few days and I'm going nuts, just hangin around "thinking" about where i will go next........

i had no idea what detectors cost when i decided that i wanted to try this little hobby.........i got a bit of a shock......i paid about 3 hundred for the coin master [new] .and thought that was a lot to pay......[.just for me to curb boredom.]...... but soon found that 3 hundred was not even a middler..

I've only gone out a few times and am just getting used to my machine, I've found a few nickels and dimes and a lot of pennies [the coinmaster goes nuts over pennies an copper??]...............we have a couple of old campgrounds that most people here don't even know existed ....i can wait to hunt them........

i have lived here all my life and i find that a lot of the places that i used to go as a kid are all fenced in and posted...........the biggest problem in this area has been, people dumping trash, and the land owners had no choice but to throw up the fences........I'll just have to ask permission now..........not something I'm used to doing??..

i found that eBay is no place to get a deal any more...........so i suppose any other detectors that i buy will also be new..........i also found that the pawn shops are [especially] pretty proud of any whites that they may have..........

hoping for a snow melt day and 40 degrees.......

[size=large]you mentioned prospecting and coin shooting. in just my opinion it seems the mxt would serve you best. it can be used in both worlds. has a great selection of coils for large field to trashy park hunting and prospecting. you are in gold country.
welcome to the forums. a lot of folks around my area use coinmasters and have no problem finding gold rings and silver as well. this recomendation goes hand in hand with wanting more detectors. some of us addicts have a little more self control than others. then some have much more ways and places to hunt. like the water. first thing i did when i retired was get my detectors. waited 40 yrs. to do this. you'll enjoy yourself for sure. so would the wife if she tried it a few times. keeps that figure slim.
