Hello from Bartonville!

Hello! My 7 year old son and I have been detecting since May and really enjoy the hobby. I have done lots of research to insure we have good luck and represent this activity in good light. We started with a bounty hunter quick silver and quickly moved up to the Ace 350 and a pro pointer which I really like. Easy for me and my boy. So far we have not done to bad. Our most notable finds are a 1925 and 1919 mercury dime a 1906 IH a 1966 Canadian dime and a women's 1995 class ring from Richwoods that we were able to return the same day. All at local parks, mostly Bradley near old wading pool.

I think it's cool there is a club in the area and see that you guys are finding some great stuff. My boy and I may be interested in joining sometime in the future. Sounds like a fairly active club.

Anyway I was wondering if you guy's are mostly doing private properties cause I am finding most parks have been cherry picked over. Finding pennies and clad is ok but my son is a coin collector and that is the main reason we got into this. I'm a little nervous about knocking on doors and not sure if I need some kind of insurance to put people's mind at ease. I have done lots of research on our area (lots of fun to, very interesting history here) and see lots of interesting places, old farms, churches, the old drag strip "boondocks" looks interesting and many more. Would never do any without permission, not how I want to teach my son or represent the hobby. Would love to hear tips, advice, or secrets you may have. Thanks. :)

Anywho enjoy your post and pics, hello from Bartonville and maybe we'll see you around.

HH!, Troy

Welcome to the forum Troy! Sounds like you're on the right track of metal detecting. I love it that you're involving your son also. It's one great hobby and extremely relaxing too, with a bonus. Congratulations on the finds.

We would love for you and your son to join us at our PATH meetings. We have a few junior members and I'm sure he would fit right in. Yes, we're a very active club and have a wonderful group of members.

As for detecting places, we do research and yes, knock on doors at times. Most parks in this area are fair game, but also it's always protocol to ask permission.

It's good to see another new name on the forum........Again, Welcome to the PATH Forum.

HH,
Nancy

Hi Troy, welcome to the forum. It sounds like you are doing everything right and hunting where no one else has hunted before is the difference between a good day and a great one.

We would love to have you and your son come to the meetings, a lot more information is given at the meetings than what is posted on here. We have two club hunts coming up next month and that is just two of many get togethers during the year.

I know everyone likes pictures and my boy and I are proud...
Not sure if the ring is silver. No markings inside. Maybe silver plated. Pretty sure the boy scout medallion is from late 60's. Class ring is 10k. My son was so excited to return it. Thanks for looking.
How do I get info on joining the club. Just show up at a meet? I know last Wed. of month but I don't know where. Also I work swing shift so not sure how many of these I could make but we are interested.

You two should be very proud of those finds. They're awesome and very spectacular finds indeed. I love seeing the Indian cent rescued from the earth. Those are one of my favorite coins. Congrats on the nice silver ring also. Heck, with the silver coins and all, you did some mighty fine detecting. Let alone the CLASS RING! My goodness, you guys hit it big.

We do meet the last Wednesday of each month. August we will be having a pot luck at Glen Oak Park. You're more than welcome to join in. It's always a great gathering and fun to talk to others. Good time to get to know the members. We do have a wonderful group of people and darn proud of it too. We would love for you and your son to join in. We'll be there at 6:00 to eat, so come on over.

Hope to see you and your son there.............wife too if she wants to come. :)

HH,
Nancy

I think we will do our best to be present. Don't see any other schedule conflicts but that is near the beginning of school, and you can always count on my work doing some impromptu overtime.
Thanks for the great comments, (if you could see my son's smile). Hope to make it to the 28th meet. HH!

Nice finds and great pictures....... Thanks for sharing with us.

That would be awesome Troy! We've always got a few extra seats waiting to be filled.

By any chance, do you have any pictures of the returned class ring and the owner? If so, you could bring them to the meeting as well. We always love to see happy faces with a "Return to Owner". We even give out a nice certificate, etc. to members that do such as that. And we wouldn't have any problem giving you one either.

HH,
Nancy

congrats on the finds! always nice to hear about a returned ring...and finding the owner is as fun as digging the ring!! nice job!!
