Hello from a new MXT owner/ forum member

Hello,

Just wanted to say howdy and introduce myself. My name is Joe and as the name says, I am a recruiter for the USAF. I am stationed at Hill AFB, Utah and like to hunt for relics, and old coins. I have been metal detecting since August of last year and cut my teeth on an ACE 250. I decided it was time to upgrade and bought my MXT this weekend. I've been out with it for a total of about 5 hours and I've starting to get the hang of it. This machine goes DEEP. It took me a while but I figured out what I was doing wrong. When I first got the machine, I tried to have a go at it without reading the instruction manual. HAH that didn't work. Here are a few things I noticed that might be beneficial to someone who may be going through the same difficulties I went through this weekend,

1) CRANK the gain if your soil conditions can handle it. I can run mine at about +2.5 without any problem. I started out using the presets and was only getting about 2-3 inches in depth. The +2.5 setting is getting to 12"+.

2) You can detune the pinpoint on shallow targets by flipping the toggle when you know you are just about over the target and then re-pinpointing. It narrows it down nicely.

3) adjust the threshold to the "edge of sound". I made the mistake of turning it up too much and it can mask targets.

4) This machine is DEFINITELY NOT an ace 250! I liked the 250 but it didn't have the capability of "whispering" on deep targets. It took me a little while to learn this. Once I figured out what I was listening to and what the sounds were, I started digging deeper targets.

5) The MXT works best if the coil is scrubbing the ground. There is a huge difference in the number of targets when you keep the coil just off the ground vs scrubbing it. I use a coil cover so I'm not worried about destroying the coil.

I haven't used the relic or prospecting mode yet, but will be in the near future. I really like this machine, and I'm sure I'll be making more mistakes along the way, but my initial opinion is that this machine rocks!!!! I'm glad I didn't get the DFX as I guess I would be more worried about tuning the thing instead of swinging it. Any one got any other advice for me, I would surely appreciate it!

This is a great website and a bunch of super people...I'm sure some of these fellas will jump in and give ya some ideas...If I remember correctly, someone had collected a lot of ideas from the forum and had put them together...hopefully he will pass that info along....Best to you....Richardntn

If you are only getting 2-3 inches depth on your presets you have a problem.I think once you learn the MXT you will find you can go deeper than 2-3 inches. HH Dennis in Idaho

I think you didn't read my post completely. I was only getting 2-3 inches when I started using it. I have no problem hitting targets around 12 inches now!

" I started out using the presets and was only getting about 2-3 inches in depth. The +2.5 setting is getting to 12"+."
At preset you should be able to get much more than 2-3 inches of depth, we have no problem getting 10 or more in our area. With the gain at +2.5 all I notice is a lot of chatter around here. I find I only use the higher gain when I have a iffy signal and then I don't think it will increase the depth by more than a inch or so. At least this is what I notice around here.

Hey Joe- Welcome to the MXT club. Glad to see you're learning quickly. I was at Hill from 85-88 and loved it. I'm curious as to what targets you are picking up at 12". If it's coins I need to learn your secret.

Good Huntin

I have found a button(approx. 3/4 inch diameter) at 10" in base housing. Today I found an older Yale lock at around 10 inches. I have found coins in hard packed sand @ 12 inches. Thought I had something good, but they were just zinkers. I have been trying to ignore the really loud signals for now, just to see how deep I can get. There have been times where I have been able to get good repeatable signals that are out of range of the pin pointer. I couldn't dig them as I was the center of attention at our local park, and I didn't want mister park attendant running me off for digging huge holes in his lawn. I'll go back in the fall and dig em, when I have the place to myself. I'm taking it to the salt lake here in the future. I'm curious to see how it performs in that extreme ground!

Hi am am curious, you say you are getting good repeatable signals but they are out of range of the pinpointer, how can that be? Dennis in Idaho

You tell me......I'm the newbie! It seems as though every time I post something on this forum, Someone has to question what I'm saying, as if I don't know what the heck I'm talking about. Maybe I don't but these are the things I've experienced the short week I've owned the machine. I don't know why I'm getting the readings that I have been; maybe the ground hear is good, but I know what I'm seeing and hearing. It's not like I just started metal detecting yesterday or anything!
