Hi;
I just started metal detecting a couple of months ago. I have a BH Camo-LS and I have found some coins( 10 or 11 dollars worth in 4 hunts with my metal detecting club. I found a gold ring and some kids toys, lots of junk and BIG metal chunks and stuff at an old farm but I haven't found any old coins yet. It seems that my detector doesn't find anything over 3 or 4 inches deep. Also when I go out with the club the other members find lots more coins than I do. Which I hope with change as I get to know my machine. I am loving metal detecting and now find myself searching for places to hunt everywhere I go. I have been researching my area and would love to go on hunts with other people as I don't feel easy detecting my myself at public places yet. I am trying to learn where I can metal detect - city parks, county parks, schools, etc. But if I ask I am told no by public officials and if I ask the detectors' club members they say yes. So should I get permission in writing or just go on theirs say so? Anyway, I am glad to find this forum and will take any advice you have!
Thanks;
Moureeng

I hunt in disc mode with disc turned all the way down. The only reason I hunt in that mode is to get the different tones. I tuen my sensitivity to about the 3 o clock position. I dig coins regularly at 5 to 6 inches. I have the sharp shooter II and they are very similar detectors. In all metal I usually get about 2 inches deeper but I do not like the one tone. Hope that helps a little.

Learning to hunt in "clean" areas in All Metals mode with a properly ground balanced machine will net you items up to 8 inches deep or more...In DISC or NOTCH modes, your gonna get 6 inches max most of the time...

HH,

I would have to say you should have no trouble metal detecting the places you mentioned. Make sure there are no signs posted on these properties that say "no Metal Detectors or detecting" if its not posted anywhere in plain sight then you should be good to go. I had a confrontation with an older gentleman who told my wife and I that we had to leave because metal detecting was not allowed in any of this cities parks. I told him I didn't see any signs that said I couldn't , and that I didn't mean any disrespect but I also wasn't leaving. He told me why they didn't allow detecting, it was because people would leave holes all over the place. They also didn't allow golfing, I showed him the proper method of cutting a plug and recovering a coin, and putting the plug back. He was impressed because he couldn't tell where I had cut plugs. Long story short Turns out he was right, the signs were there at one time but someone had removed them. I didn't get kicked out, but found out at a later date about this particular cities parks. I went to a couple more parks in the city and low and behold the signs were there, that put a damper on my day. It never hurts to try a spot and to stand your ground, even if in the end you find out you're wrong.
