Heidi's summer of rat sitting.

My daughter Heidi was about 13 years old.

She told us to come pick her up as it was the last
day of school. Sounded reasonable so we went to
pick her up. When we arrived she had cages beside.
They had a bunch of rats in them and since they
could not be left in school she volunteered to take care
of them for summer. Seemed like a nice gesture at the
time so we loaded them up and home they came.

These were BIG rats and all seemed fine until the
phone calls starting coming in. It seems the boys
that took the snakes home were now calling for their
share of the summer bounty. The rats were food for the
snakes. Well, as soon as Heidi heard that, we heard
thatoh familiar voice say. NOT MY RATS. No WAY, NO HOW.

Well they kept calling and she kept telling them that they
had all died when the cats got a hold of them. Truth was, they lived
here for a pretty long time before she gave them to my wife's
cousin who belonged to a Rat Club of all things. They had rat
get together's all over and she had a lot of them.

Later back in school they kept asking her about the rats
and as a lot of kids used to hang out there they knew that in
fact the rats were still here. She just was not going to let them
become snake food. They really were pretty friendly rats and she
got a lot of enjoyment from them.

Not a big story but a little snippet in the life of a young girl
who still would not harm any animal. All her pets, 2 dogs, 1 horse
and a huge hamster are all rescue animals and here on the farm.

Rats from school would have been no problems for the kids, George. But those suckers that lived in the horse barns were fair game for the dogs with the girls cheering them on. :):

Nice little story bud.. Congratulations to Heidi for her determination. Thank you

I would think that those boys with the snakes could have gone down to a pet shop and bought some mice or rats for food....or maybe use some hamburger meat because the snakes would probably not know the difference. Children like Heidi really loves their animals and will do what it takes to protect them...she did good. Thanks for posting this story...I enjoyed reading it. Please have a great day! which grossed out a few people but I never really liked feeding time. They want live food and do watch them zeroing in on a frog or toad bothered me. Frogs and toads are cold blooded so they didn't die very fast and I have heard the dang things still croak when they were six inches down the snake. Nasty stuff.

I had a big hog nosed snake that swallered two big toads and when I picked the sucker up it got upset and puked the toads up. The things were still alive and I just could not put them through that again and turned them loose.

I used to have a bunch of pet rats too but could never feed them to the snakes.

My sister used to feed her snake hot dogs. Microwave them to body temp, wave them in front of the critter and.................
