My daughter Heidi was about 13 years old.
She told us to come pick her up as it was the last
day of school. Sounded reasonable so we went to
pick her up. When we arrived she had cages beside.
They had a bunch of rats in them and since they
could not be left in school she volunteered to take care
of them for summer. Seemed like a nice gesture at the
time so we loaded them up and home they came.
These were BIG rats and all seemed fine until the
phone calls starting coming in. It seems the boys
that took the snakes home were now calling for their
share of the summer bounty. The rats were food for the
snakes. Well, as soon as Heidi heard that, we heard
thatoh familiar voice say. NOT MY RATS. No WAY, NO HOW.
Well they kept calling and she kept telling them that they
had all died when the cats got a hold of them. Truth was, they lived
here for a pretty long time before she gave them to my wife's
cousin who belonged to a Rat Club of all things. They had rat
get together's all over and she had a lot of them.
Later back in school they kept asking her about the rats
and as a lot of kids used to hang out there they knew that in
fact the rats were still here. She just was not going to let them
become snake food. They really were pretty friendly rats and she
got a lot of enjoyment from them.
Not a big story but a little snippet in the life of a young girl
who still would not harm any animal. All her pets, 2 dogs, 1 horse
and a huge hamster are all rescue animals and here on the farm.
