Heavily modded compadre

New member
Did anyone notice that apparently very well modified compadre on a certain well-know auction site? It already sold for 199 in a couple of hours. It had a ground balance dial, sensitivity, disc/"coin check" mode toggle, but it looks like it still had a fixed coil. With the ground adjust you would feel more free to change coils. I have no idea how well it was done but it looked good.

I hadn't read yet the thread on here about the modded compadre needing the 5 pin connector, probably the same machine I guess.

I have a Compadre that has the 5 pin coil connector that was added and it certainly does make the machine more flexible, only other mod that i may have is either sensitivity or GB one,the sensitivity one would be the slightly better move for my type of detecting.Cannot see the logic in adding many more,as these mods wont change a entry level detector into a super duper detector.

The Compadre is great at what it does, but will never be a heavy hitter,i tend to carry mine in the truck just incase i fancy the odd few hours detecting that type of thing, its a fun machine and certainly would not take over as a every day machine on say my ploughed and rolled and pasture sites.

Assuming that the compadre might actually be somewhat "magic" in its ability to find the goodies in certain situations, and mine does seem to, I would not monkey with its settings. Maybe I would with an untested one, as they are relatively inexpensive anyway.

I saw that machine. I think the coin check would be an awesome feature alone!

I have added just about everything I could to a Compadre. Sensitivity, connectors, 3 different disc controls, I havent done the GB mod. Made a waterproof one. What it came down to for me was if you really want to mod it, do the Connector and Sensitivity mods. The rest seemed unnecessary. I currently run mine with the 5.75"coil and the sensitivity is probably in just about the same place the factory put it. The sensitivity is nice for when you are near power lines or other EMI so you can turn it down. What you basically end up with is a 12 khz Silver micromax.

You use the 'Power Balance' technique I have mentioned on forums since '96 and taught in seminars since '81. That stated, I am not a fan of any modified Compadre because those I've handled just haven't seemed to result in ample performance and versatility for the dollar and time invested compared with just buying a factory-produced model that is a manually Ground Balanced design.

Unless one just likes tinkering with electronics, I fail to see any reall advantage over buying a model that comes with most or all of the "would be" mods in the first place.
