Took my hunting buddy to a new spot I found last week when I only had time to spot check it and I found quite a few wheats. A short time after we got there he found a Barber dime right under the surface in the grass roots, so we knew the targets weren't all deep. After finding a few wheats I got a solid, but funky sounding reading that was hitting almost up near the zinc penny range. I cut a plug and flipped it over - the target was in the plug. I dug it out with my hand and as I lifted the large coin I could see GOLD showing through the dirt layer - My heart started to pound! I could see some reeding on the edge and I was afraid to rub the coin to find out what it was. OH my GOD, could it be my first gold coin!?? My buddy had been watching me. He said the look on my face was priceless.
Well, after rinsing it - wouldn't you know it - NOT gold. It was a 1984 Mexican $100 coin made of aluminum/bronze. I'll tell you though, that gold color really had my heart thumping!! I also found a 1947 Rosie and more wheats. There is still a lot more ground to cover.
